High school baseball: Another comeback win for Wash High
For the second time in four days, Washington used a big sixth-inning comeback to gain a baseball victory.
The Prexies scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth Tuesday to top Charleroi 5-1 in the Class 3A Section 4 opener at EQT Park. Wash High scored 10 runs in the sixth to beat Bishop Canevin on Saturday.
Wash High (1-0, 2-1) trailed 1-0 entering the sixth. A hit batsman, walk and RBI single by Will Callan tied the score. A walk loaded the bases and Isaac Charnik unloaded an inside-the-park grand slam that gave the Prexies the lead.
Callan was the winning pitcher, throwing a five-hitter. He also hit a double.
Logan Henderson had two hits for Charleroi (0-1, 0-1).
Waynesburg 5, Brownsville 1: CJ Corwin did it all for Waynesburg, pitching a complete game with 10 strikeouts and hitting a homer, a double and drove in four runs in a 5-1 victory over Brownsville in Class 3A Section 4.
Corwin did not walk a batter, allowed only two hits and one unearned run and pitched an immaculate fifth inning, retiring the side on three strikeouts with nine pitches. He hit a two-run homer to center field in the fifth inning and had a two-run double in the third inning.
Jeremiah McDonald took the loss for Brownsville allowing five runs, two earned, over six innings. McDonald doubled and scored Brownsville’s lone run.
Fort Cherry 15, Beth-Center 10: Fort Cherry hit five home runs, including two each by Colton Temple and Nathan Wolfe, as the Rangers overpowered visiting Beth-Center 15-10 in Class 2A Section 1.
Beth-Center led 5-2 in the second inning, but Fort Cherry went ahead in the third when Wolfe hit a two-run homer. Ryan Huey followed with a solo shot.
Temple and Ben Deamscal each drove in three runs for FC. Temple was the winning pitcher in relief.
Chase Bebout hit a grand slam and drove in five runs for Beth-Center.
Canon-McMillan 9, Thomas Jefferson 4: Matthew Kocan struck out nine over six innings and Blake Simmonds drove in a pair of runs as Canon-McMillan defeated Thomas Jefferson 9-4 in non-section action.
The Big Macs improve to 3-0.
Nico Patragas had a double for Canon-Mac.
Serra Catholic 11, Monessen 0: Defending Class A champion Serra Catholic scored seven runs in the fifth inning to finish off an 11-0 win at Monessen in Section 3.
Three different Serra players drove in two runs each to support pitcher Mark Johnson, who struck out five.
Elizabeth Forward 1, Ringgold 0: JB Crovak struck out 17 batters in a complete game one-hitter as Elizabeth Forward won a 1-0 pitcher’s duel against Ringgold in Class 4A Section 2.
Crovak allowed only one walk.
Anthony Koziel was sharp on the hill for Ringgold. He allowed one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over seven innings.
The Warriors’ Aiden Grimes scored the lone run in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch.
Frazier 13, Bentworth 2: Frazier scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning on its way to a 13-2 win in five innings over Bentworth in Class 2A Section 1. The Bearcats scored one run in the second and fourth innings. Jacob Cavanaugh singled twice for Bentworth.
Belle Vernon 5, Uniontown 1: Zach Plymire allowed one run over five innings pitched and drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the third in a 5-1 win for Belle Vernon over Uniontown in a Class 4A Section 2 game.
Plymire gave up five hits, walked none and struck out seven. Max Manley hit an RBI double for the Leopards.
South Park 15, California 0: South Park scored 12 runs in the third inning and defeated visiting California 15-0 in four innings.
The Trojans were held to one hit.
Moon 16, South Fayette 6: Nick Machusko blasted a two-run home run as part of a 17-hit barrage for Moon in a 16-6 win against South Fayette in Class 5A Section 2.
Luca Gioia led the Lions with three runs batted in on a double and triple.
