High school softball: Bentworth’s Gonglik strikes out all of ’em

Tedrow fans 35 as Waynesburg wins 2

The Bentworth softball team’s fielders weren’t exactly busy during their non-section game Wednesday at Avella. That’s because Bentworth pitcher Sydney Gonglik, an LSU recruit, struck out all 18 batters she faced, throwing a perfect game, in the Bearcats’ 11-0 victory in six innings.

Gonglik threw only 68 pitches (54 strikes).

Mya Gonglik was 2-for-4 with a double and scored two runs as Bentworth improved to 5-0. Alexa Babirad and Nora Lindley also doubled for the Bearcats.

Waynesburg 6, Woodbridge 0: Gina Tedrow fired a seven-inning no-hitter and Kolbi Rastoka had a pair of run-scoring hits as Waynesburg defeated Woodbridge (Ohio) 6-0 in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., on Wednesday morning.

Tedrow struck out 17 and walked three in her second no-hitter of the Raiders’ southern trip.

Waynesburg gave its pitcher all the support she needed in the first inning when the Raiders scored four runs.

Rastoka led the offense with two hits, two RBI and a double. Bria Stephenson also doubled and scored twice.

Waynesburg 4, Kenston 3: Eva Pester hit a tiebreaking RBI single in Waynesburg’s four-run sixth inning as the Raiders rallied for a 4-3 win over Kenston (Ohio) in Piegone Forge, Tenn.

Waynesburg (3-1), in its second game of the day in Pigeon Forge, trailed 2-0 entering the sixth and had two outs and one runner on base when a walk preceded Gina Tedrow’s two-run double. After a passed ball, Pester put Waynesburg ahead with her RBI single and she would eventually score on a bases-loaded walk to Devin Moore.

Tedrow was the winning pitcher, tossing a six-hitter with 18 strikeouts. She had 35 strikeouts on the day.

Keystone Oaks 3, South Fayette 1: Kennadi Smith threw a four-hitter and struck out 13 as Keystone Oaks edged South Fayette 3-1 in a non-section game.

The game was tied 1-1 before KO scored twice in the fourth inning.

Addie Vierra tripled and scored the lone run for South Fayette (1-3).

Trinity 12, Upper St. Clair 2: Trinity scored eight runs in the fifth inning to finish off a 12-2 thumping of visiting Upper St. Clair in a non-section game.

Gabby Humphreys hit a two-run homer for the Hillers’ big hit. Ally Krenzelak went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and three runs for Trinity (6-0).

USC’s Caroline Barnard hit two doubles.

Carmichaels 10, Frazier 0: Joselyn Carter hit a three-run homer, Carys McConnell added a two-run shot and Bailey Barnyak threw a two-hitter as Carmichaels beat visiting Frazier 10-0 in five innings.

Carter went 2-for-3 with four RBI, Barnyak had three singles, and Payton Plavi doubled for the Mikes (2-2), who stopped a two-game slide.

Canon-McMillan 15, Pine-Richland 4: Canon-McMillan went ahead in the fifth inning and then scored seven runs in the seventh to beat Pine-Richland 15-4 in Class 6A Section 1.

C-M (2-0, 3-0) took a 5-4 lead on an RBI single by Addy Jordan and tacked on three more runs in the fifth for an 8-4 lead.

Kadence Merigo had a home run among C-M’s 18 hits. Jordan, Morgan Bumer and Lyla Mowery doubled and Aurora Shirdon had three hits and three RBI.

Beth-Center 16, Monessen 6: Beth-Center trailed 3-1 in entering the bottom of the third, but the Bulldogs scored seven runs in the third and eight in the fourth to beat Monessen 16-6 in a non-section game.

Winning pitcher Kendall Welsh went 3-for-3 with a triple and six RBI to lead the B_C attack. Emmalee Liberatore had two hits, two RBI and scored three times.

Monessen’s Mya Kelly was 3-for-3.

Chartiers-Houston 16, Fort Cherry 0: Chartiers-Houston just keeps on winning, and by the 10-run rule.

The Bucs remained unbeaten with a 16-0 win over visiting Fort Cherry 15-0 in three innings in the Class 2A Section 3 opener.

The Bucs (1-0, 6-0) scored 14 runs in the second inning.

Kiera Drilka and Sophia Robinson each homered. Robinson had a team-high four RBI. Seanna Riggle and Mackenzie Shumar each had a pair of doubles.

Pitchers Taryne Drilak and Riggle combined on a no-hitter.

Jefferson-Morgan 5, McGuffey 2: Gabriella Marmie homered, drove in two runs and scored twice, EEmilee Bazzoli took a shutout into the seventh inning and Jefferson-Morgan beat host McGuffey 5-2 in non-section play.

Bazzoli struck out nine. Ava Wood and Kelsey Vessels each doubled for J-M (3-1).

Nicole Klages had three hits for McGuffey (0-1).

Mount Pleasant 15, Charleroi 5: Mount Pleasant scored nine runs in the top of the sixth inning to beat Charleroi 15-5 in non-section play.

Ariana Blouse, Lyla Brunner and Payton Huweart each had a double for Charleroi (1-2). Blouse went 3-for-3.

Elizabeth Forward 13, Ringgold 3: Elizabeth Forward scored eight runs in the second inning and went on to a 13-3 win over Ringgold in Class 4A Section 2.

Addison Jenkins homered and finished with three RBI for Ringgold (0-2, 0-2).

Uniontown 5, Belle Vernon 1: Belle Vernon had nine hits but could muster only a single run in a 5-1 loss at Uniontown in Class 4A Section 2.

The Leopards’ run came on a homer by Bella Williams.

Yough 14, California 2: Yough used three four-run innings to beat California 14-2 in five innings.
