High school baseball: Carmichaels overcomes 8-run deficit to win
It didn’t look good for the Carmichaels baseball team in the fourth inning Thursday against visiting Frazier. The Mikes were trailing 9-1, but they still had 12 outs to work with and were determined to use them to their advantage.
It turned out they didn’t even need the final three outs.
Carmichaels scored 10 runs in the fifth inning and rallied for a wild 15-10 victory in a nonsection game.
Brayden Andrews and Scottie Maskil both had three-hit games and drove in three runs for the Mikes (3-1).
Carmichaels scored four times in the fourth to cut Frazier’s lead to 9-5. The Mikes took the lead at 11-9 in the fifth on a single by Owen Ray, and Maskil had a two-run single later in the inning.
Avella 10, West Greene 0: Chas Rush had a huge day, sparking Avella to a 10-0 win over West Greene in Class A Section 1 and a sweep of the two-game series.
Rush allowed one hit over six innings and helped his cause with a home run, four RBI and two stolen bases. Rush struck out eight and did not issue a walk.
Bryce Wright doubled and scored three times, and Cam Ullom drove in three runs for Avella 2-0, 3-0).
A single by Dylan Hughes was the lone hit Rush allowed.
Washington 10, Monessen 1: Washington scored eight runs over the first two innings and cruised to a 10-1 victory over Monessen in a nonsection game at EQT Park.
Winning pitcher Isaac Charnik allowed three hits and one run over six innings. Nick Patton led the hitting for Wash High (4-2), going 2-for-2 with two runs and a pair of RBI from the leadoff spot. Tristan Coney doubled and drove in two, and Bronx Partozoti added a double.
Canon-McMillan 9, Montour 0: M.J. Maruschak struck out 12 over six innings to lead Canon-McMillan (4-0) to a 9-0 win over Montour (2-2) in a nonsection game.
Maruschak allowed four hits and walked two.
Blake Simmons had a big day at the plate going 2 for 4 with three RBI. Simmons had a two-run double to center field in a four-run bottom of the third for the Big Macs.
Trinity 13, Chartiers Valley 0: Derek Falvo homered, doubled and drove in five runs as Trinity blanked Chartiers Valley 13-0 in five innings in a Class 5A Section 2 game.
The win earned the Hillers (1-1, 1-5) a split with the Colts (1-1, 1-2) in the two-game series.
Karson Hathaway also homered for the Hillers in a four-run second inning. Jonah Williamson added a two-run double and Jase Hartley ripped an RBI triple.
Hathaway earned the win by pitching five shutout innings. He allowed three hits, walked four and struck out two.
The Hillers put the game away by plating eight runs in the fifth.
Greensburg CC 8, Jefferson-Morgan 2: Thomas Samide went 3-for-4 with a home run and two doubles, powering Greensburg Central Catholic to an 8-2 win at Jefferson-Morgan and a sweep of the two-game series in Class A Section 1.
GCC (2-0, 2-2) led 3-0 in the first inning but J-M closed to within 3-2 in the fourth. The Centurions tacked on a run in the fifth and four in the pivotal sixth inning.
Winning pitcher Alec Martin struck out 11 over 5.2 innings.
J-M’s John Woodward had a double.
Elizabeth Forward 11, Ringgold 2: Two Elizabeth Forward pitchers combined on a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Elizabeth Forward defeated Ringgold 11-2 and a sweep of the two-game Class 4A Section 2 series.
EF (2-0, 4-1) had four two-run innings. Josh Johnson doubled and drove in three runs for the Warriors.
Ringgold’s Xander Mahoney hit a two-run double.
