High school baseball: Charleroi stops Waynesburg’s comeback, 11-10
Charleroi’s Dylan Klinger scored from third base on an RBI groundout by Jake Corrin in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking a tie and giving Charleroi an entertaining 11-10 win over Waynesburg in a Class 3A Section 4 baseball game Tuesday between playoff-bound teams.
Charleroi (7-5, 10-8) led 6-0 in the fifth inning but Waynesburg rallied and tied the score at 10-10 after scoring seven times in the top of the sixth.
Charleroi’s Brock Henderson had three hits, including a double.
Waynesburg (6-6, 7-12) tied the game in the sixth when R.J. Whyel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Carmichaels 11, West Greene 1: Owen Ray threw a four-hitter and playoff-bound Carmichaels scored six times in the first inning and went on to an 11-1 win in six innings over visiting West Greene in Class A Section 1.
Ray took a shutout into the sixth. He struck out five and walked only one batter.
Cooper Richards had two hits and drove in four runs for the Mikes (7-5, 8-9).
Jeannette 6, Jefferson-Morgan 5: Wyatt Schaeffer’s two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Amari Thomas from third base, giving Jeannette a 6-5 win over Jefferson-Morgan and a split of the two-game series in Class A Section 1.
Jefferson-Morgan (7-5, 11-8) is headed to the playoffs but Jeannette (6-6, 10-7) was eliminated when Carmichaels defeated West Greene.
The Rockets fell behind 4-0 after four innings but battled back and took a 5-4 lead by scoring three times in the top of the seventh. Joe Bair had a tiebreaking RBI single but Jeannette threw out J-M’s trail runner at home plate on the play.
That proved to be a key play when Jeannette got a game-tying single from Kenndy Himes that forced extra innings. J-M loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but hit into an inning-ending double play.
Moon 7, Trinity 3: Nick Machusko homered and Savario Vandetti reached base four times and drove in a pair of runs, sparking Moon to a 7-3 victory over visiting Trinity in Class 5A Section 2.
The loss ended Trinity’s playoff hopes. Upper St. Clair, which defeated Chartiers Valley 11-2, gained the final playoff berth from the section, eliminating Peters Township, which played South Fayette last night.
Moon (9-3, 15-4) won the outright section title. The Tigers built a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning. Trinity (5-7, 10-10) battled back behind solo home runs by Jonah Williamson and Owen Samogala. The Hillers outhit Moon 7-6. Derek Falvo, Tim Crayton and Landon Conn hit doubles.
Keystone Oaks 7, Washington 4: Max Boehm pitched into the seventh inning and drove in two runs, leading Keystone Oaks to a 7-4 win over visiting Washington.
Boehm took a shutout into the seventh before Wash High (4-8, 7-12) scored four times.The Prexies outhit KO 13-9 but all of the Prexies’ hits were singles. Will Callan drove in two of the Wash High runs.
Brandon Kaminski hit two doubles and drove in a pair of runs for KO (7-5, 9-9).
California 9, Chartiers-Houston 7: California scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a 9-7 win over visiting Chartiers-Houston in a Class 2A Section 1 game.
The loss put the playoff hopes of Chartiers-Houston (5-7, 9-9) in limbo, pending the outcome of Frazier’s game last night at Beth-Center.
Chartiers-Houston led 7-3 in the fourth inning before California (10-2, 13-6) started its comeback.
Winning pitcher Logan Hartley drove in three runs, Easton Daniels tripled and Eli Carpenter went 3-for-3 and scored two runs for the Trojans.
Parker Riggle had three hits, including a triple, for Chartiers-Houston.
the fourth inning and tacking on four-run innings in the fifth and sixth.
Trayvon Moye drove in Wash High’s lone run.
Laurel Highlands 10, Ringgold 0: Jack Johns pitched a two-hit shutout as Laurel Highlands knocked off visiting Ringgold 10-0 in six innings in Class 4A Section 2.
Johns struck out nine and walked two. He was supported at the plate by Aiden Milsom, who doubled and drove in three runs.
Kennedy Nash had both hits for Ringgold (6-6, 9-9), which clinched a playoff berth Monday by beating LH.
Greensburg Central Catholic 16, Mapletown 1: Anthony Grippo and Tyler Samide combined for four extra-base hits and 10 RBI as undefeated Class A Section 1 champion Greensburg Central Catholic routed Mapletown 16-1 in four innings.
Grippo doubled, tripled and drove in six runs. He also pitched two scoreless innings. Samide hit a three-run homer and a double. He finished with four RBI. GCC was helped by nine walks by Mapletown pitchers.
The Maples (0-12, 3-17) were held to one hit, a single by Sam Moritz.
East Allegheny 10, Avella 7: East Allegheny forged a 10-run lead, then held off a late comeback by Avella to beat the host Eagles 10-7 in a nonsection game.
East Allegheny (1-15) 10-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Avella scored one run in the fifth and added six more in the sixth.
Avella (11-7) had eight hits, including a double by Chas Rush, who drove in a pair of runs.Brayden Fuller also had two RBI.
Trinity 10, Moon 4: Karson Hathaway and Ayvari Chandler both had four-hits, Derek Falvo drove in three runs and Trinity defeated playoff-bound Moon 10-4 on Monday night in Class 5A Section 2.
Hathaway hit two doubles and pitched six innings to get the win. He was backed by a pair of four-run innings by the Trinity hitters.
Falvo and Chandler each had a double to help Trinity keep its postseason chances alive entering Tuesday, the final day of section play.
Keystone Oaks 10, Washington 1: Nate Rohe pitched a two-hit complete game with 11 strikeouts as Keystone Oaks defeated Washington 10-1 in a Class 3A Section 4 game Monday night at EQT Park.
The loss knocked Washington out of playoff contention. KO, meanwhile, has clinched a postseason berth.
