High school roundup: Skeen leads South Fayette to upset victory

Trey Skeen homered and pitched a two-hitter as 10th-seeded South Fayette knocked off seventh-seeded Franklin Regional 8-2 in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A baseball playoffs Tuesday at West Mifflin High School.
South Fayette (12-9) advances to the quarterfinals Tuesday and will play second-seeded Penn-Trafford on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.
The Lions broke a 2-2 tie by scoring five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Jacob Bostian snapped the tie with a bases-loaded two-run single. Following a sacrifice fly that made it 5-2, Skeen laced a two-run homer to left field.
On the mound, Skeen walked three and struck out two. He allowed only one earned run in an 88-pitch complete game.
Franklin Regional ends the season with a 13-7 record.
Avonworth 6, Waynesburg 0: Three Avonworth pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as top-seeded Avonworth blanked Waynesburg 6-0 in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A baseball playoffs at Ross Memorial Park.
Avonworth (16-5) scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised from there behind its pitching and an offense that hit three triples. Carter Latore hit a two-run triple in the first inning.
Starter Cooper Scharding struck out seven over four innings and he was followed on the mound by Nathan Slater and Carson Franc. The trio combined for 11 strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Grant Pack and Kory Taylor both had a double for Waynesburg (7-13).
Softball
Thomas Jefferson 3, South Fayette 2: Aubrey Shaffer fired a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts, leading second-seeded Thomas Jefferson to a 3-2 win over South Fayette in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs at the Pleasant Valley Elementary School field in McMurray.
Thomas Jefferson (16-3) advances to the quarterfinals Thursday against 10th-seeded Plum, which upset seventh-seeded Trinity.
Shaffer did not allow an earned run and benefited from a two-run first inning.
The Jaguars pushed the lead to 3-0 by scoring on a South Fayette error.
The Lions (10-9) scored both of their runs in the top of the sixth. Caroline Kelly had a two-run single that scored Liv Bonacci and Evie Vuono.
South Fayette pitcher Emma Earley matched Shaffer by tossing a three-hitter. She walked two and struck out seven.
