Froelich goes the distance, wins two events
SLIPPERY ROCK – It’s a good thing they take buses to these events or the local girls track teams might not have enough room for all the gold medals they won at the WPIAL Track and Field Championships at Slippery Rock University.
Kathryn Froelich of Peters Township won two gold medals, South Fayette’s Delaney Schumaker won two, Ella Sammel of Trinity won one, and the 3,200-meter relay team from South Fayette repeated as champion.
“I like to run in the cold,” said Froelich, who won both Class 3A distance races. “When it’s hot, it feels like I’m overheated. I didn’t have a strategy. I just wanted to qualify for states.”
Sammel won the high jump (5-5) and qualified for states in the 100 hurdles with a personal best time of 15.01, which also re-established the school record.
“I felt pretty confident. I felt strong even though it was pretty cold out,” Sammel said.
Schumaker swept the Class 3A 100- and 300-meter hurdles. She won the 100 in 14.27 and the 300 in 43.67.
The four runners on the Lions team were, in order, Nina DiMartini, Ellena Gibbs, Maddie Stock and Angela Zeng.
“They are easy to coach,” said Winans. “They are open to getting better and working hard every time.”
Four of the top five teams were from local schools.
Other girls earning a trip to the state tournament, along with a medal, included: Ava Ullom of McGuffey, who finished fifth in the 3A shot put; Micaella Schuler of South Fayette, who was fifth in the Class 3A 100-meter dash (12.46) and fourth in the long jump; Amelia Brose of Chartiers-Houstonin who was (15.59), fourth in the Class 2A 100 hurdles (15.59); Madeline Stock of Canon-McMillan was fourth in the Class 3A 800 (2:18.38); Adelaide Lullich, of Peters Township who finished third in the 3,200; Madison Blair, who was fifth in the Class 2A in the pole vault (9-0); Ava Kolovich of Chartiers-Houston, who 5th in the javelin and Angela Zeng of South Fayette (4:54.27) and Allyson Froelich of Peters Township (5:05.53) both in the 1,600 run.
