High school softball: McGuffey, Jefferson-Morgan advance to quarterfinals

Miley Main pitched a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts and also drove in a pair of runs as McGuffey defeated Hopewell 7-3 in a WPIAL Class 3A first-round softball playoff game played Thursday at Montour.

The fifth-seeded Highlanders (10-6) advance to play No. 4 Ellwood City in the quarterfinals on Monday at a site and time to be determined.

McGuffey scored the game’s first seven runs, all in the opening four innings.

Sidney Dobrzynski had a double and drove in a pair and Nicole Klages had two hits and scored twice. Main helped her cause with a double.

Abigail Babinsack doubled and reached base three times for Hopewell (6-9).

Jefferson-Morgan 18, Leechburg 2: Jefferson-Morgan had no trouble advancing to the Class A quarterfinals as the Rockets crushed overmatched Leechburg 18-2 in three innings at Gateway.

Fifth-seeded Jefferson-Morgan (15-6) will play fourth-seeded Serra Catholic on Monday at a site and time to be determined.

The Rockets scored all 18 of their runs in the bottom of the first inning on 14 hits and three walks.

Leechburg entered the playoffs with a 2-10 record with both wins coming against the Ellis School.

Emilee Bazzoli went 3-for-3 and hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Ava Wood had a triple and double, and winning pitcher Gabriella Marmie hit two of J-M’s six doubles. Addyson TeagardenKallyn Novak and Robi Finley had the other two-baggers. Bazzoli drove in four runs.

South Side Beaver 4, Beth-Center 3: Sixth-seeded South Side Beaver scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat 11th-seeded Beth-Center 4-3 in a Class A first-round game played at Waynesburg University.

Beth-Center (5-9) led for almost the entire game. The Bulldogs scored a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Bella Stepp. South Side (10-8) scored two runs in the second inning, but B-C answered with two in the top of the third to regain the lead at 3-2. Stepp drove in both runs with another double.

The game remained 3-2 into the bottom of the seventh when South Side used a double, walk, two singles and an error to push across two runs.

Kendall Welsh had two hits and scored two runs for B-C.

Burrell 6, Charleroi 3: Sixth-seeded Burrell overcame a midgame deficit to beat upset-minded Charleroi 6-3 in a Class 3A first-round game played at Norwin.

Charleroi (5-13), the No. 11 seed, led 1-0 before Burrell scored twice in the fourth inning and tacked on four runs in the fifth.

Tina Gural drove in three runs for the Bucs (11-8) and pitcher Shelby Novak struck out eight.

Charleroi outhit Burrell 10-8. The Cougars’ Jada Sheppick had two hits, including a double, and Lyla Brunner also doubled. Ariahna Blouse had two singles.

Sewickley Academy 10, Monessen 7: Sewickley Academy scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take the lead and then held off a late comeback to beat Monessen 10-7 in a Class A first-round game.
