The Peters Township girls volleyball team will be playing for another WPIAL championship on Saturday, and the Indians will get to make the attempt on their home court.

Peters Township routed previously undefeated Penn-Trafford 3-0 in the Class 5A semifinals Wednesday. Scores were 25-16, 25-11, 25-16.

Peters Township used a 10-3 run in the first game to take a 16-13 lead and the Indians were never challenged from that point.

The Indians (20-1) will play North Catholic (17-1) in the championship match Saturday at Peters Township’s AHN Arena. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

North Catholic beat Shaler to get to the title match. North Catholic lost the first game but rallied with wins of 25-20, 25-22, 25-21.

Peters Township swept Pine-Richland to win the Class 4A championship last year. The PIAA increased girls volleyball to six classes this season.

Bentworth 3, Riverview 0

Bentworth won’t win another WPIAL championship this year, but the Bearcats can win a state title.

Bentworth clinched a berth in the PIAA tournament by defeating Riverview 3-0 Thursday night in the WPIAL Class A third-place game Thursday at Avonworth.

Bentworth will play the District 10 champion Seneca in the first round on Tuesday.

Against Riverview, Brielle Dillon scored two goals to lead the Bearcats. Joa Johns had the other goal and that was more than enough for the bentworth defense and goalkeeper Julia Brandau. The Bearcats held a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Riverview’s season ends with a 14-3 record.

“Riverview had a pretty good first half despite being down 2-0,” Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra said. “We did a good job of absorbing and countering. We really controlled the second half.”
