Peters Township nets another WPIAL volleyball title
McMURRAY – For Peters Township’s girls volleyball team, twice is nice. Very nice.
The Indians made it two WPIAL championships in a row Saturday, following up last year’s Class 4A title with a victory in Class 5A.
Peters Township disposed of North Catholic, 3-1, winning 25-21,25-13 and 25-15 on their home court. The Indians were handed their first lost of these playoffs when North Catholic took the second set, 25-23.
“It’s hard to say,” Peters Township volleyball coach Chris Kelly said when asked which class was more fun winning. “Five is fun. There are so many teams. That’s pretty special. But then we don’t get to play Pine-Richland.”
The Indians beat Pine-Richland in the 4A final last year. Pine-Richland won the 6A championship this year.
Peters Township used its physicality in the form of 5-10 junior Alex Knox, 5-11 senior Mara Radulovich and 5-11, junior Maddie Farrell to strengthen the front line.
“We knew we needed to serve aggressively,” Kelly said. “Early on we weren’t serving very well. We weren’t serving very well and they were passing well. Eventually, I thought we wore them down.”
North Catholic head coach Amanda Fetter said Peters Township was one of the toughest teams North Catholic had to play.
“We didn’t play in the other classification so I don’t know,” Fetter said. But oh my are they good. The serving made the difference. We weren’t serving well and they did.”
Fetter said the second set, which North Catholic won 25-23, was more of a problem.
“Once they found a rhythm, it was over,” Fetter said. “That’s not sour grapes. We’ll play wherever and whenever they tell us. That’s the least of our worries.”
Peters Township wrapped up the first game after securing nine of the final 10 points. North Catholic scored six of the final 10 points to win Game 2. PT ripped off seven of the last 10 points to secure Game 3. Peters Township put the match away by winning nine of the last 10 points.
“This was a really good rivalry,” said Knox, a Pitt commit. “We have a strong offense, a lot of bigger players. Losing the set woke us up. We didn’t expect them to come back the way they did.”
Peters Township will play Lower Dauphin, the third-place team from District 3, in the first round of the PIAA playoffs that begin Tuesday.
