McKinney rallies Woodland Hills past Canon-Mac
CANONSBURG – Jaron McKinney passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, Jaden Jones returned an interception for a score and Woodland Hills overcame an early 14-point deficit to win at Canon-McMillan 35-17 in a nonconference game Friday night.
Canon-McMillan (3-4) led 14-0 less than 10 minutes into the game as Ty Jansma threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Schmeltz and also ran five yards for a score.
McKinney got Woodland Hills (4-3) going early in the second quarter as he scored on a four-yard run that cut the C-M lead in half.
The Big Macs’ Rhys Maentz booted a 23-yard field goal that gave the home team a 17-7 edge midway through the second quarter.
McKinney then produced a game-changing play just before halftime. On fourth-and-six, McKinney fought off a C-M tackler and lofted a 12-yard touchdown pass to Nico Major, who made a diving catch in the end zone with 23 seconds left in the half. The play pulled the Wolverines to within 17-14.
McKinney and Major hooked up again, this time for a 35-yard TD pass that put Woodland Hills up 21-17.
Jones then intercepted a tipped screen pass and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown. The Wolverines capped the scoring with a 28-yard run by DJ Dutrieville with 10:35 remaining.
Jansma completed 13 of 22 passes for 136 yards. Bryce Collins rushed for 109 yards and also caught four passes.
