Hackinson boots Bentworth to win in OT
ELLSWORTH – Cade Hackinson booted a 22-yard field goal on the second possession of overtime Friday night, giving Bentworth a 20-17 victory over Brentwood in a Class A Black Hills Conference football game.
Bentworth (1-0, 3-2) trailed 9-0 before taking the lead in the second half. Brentwood, however, forced overtime by scoring a touchdown and two-point conversion with 4:06 left in regulation.
On the first possession of overtime, Bentworth recovered a Brentwood fumble and all the Bearcats needed to win was to score.
Hacksinson’s game-winner was his second field goal of the night. He booted a 27-yarder that gave Bentworth a 10-9 lead midway through the third quarter.
Jacob Cavanaugh scored on a one-yard plunge that pushed the Bearcats’ lead to 17-9 early in the fourth quarter.
Brentwood (0-2, 1-4) scored on a four-yard TD run by Nick Wardzinski and a conversion pass from Thatcher Eriole to Orlando Johnson, forcing overtime.
Bentworth fell behind 9-0 early in the second quarter because of special teams miscues. Brentwood scored a safety in the first quarter when a snap from center sailed over the Bentworth punter’s head and went out of the end zone.
In the second quarter, Bentworth’s defense stopped Brentwood on three consecutive plays from the Bearcats’ one-yard line, forcing a turnover on downs. Bentworth couldn’t move the ball and had to punt. The kick was blocked and recovered in the end zone for a touchdown that made it 9-0.
Bentworth closed to within two points before halftime on a 27-yard run around left end by Noah Leichty.
