Hempfield eges Canon-Mac in wild overtime game
GREENSBURG – Carden Lippman passed for three touchdowns and ran for a score in overtime that gave Hempfield a wild 38-34 victory over Canon-McMillan in a Class 6A Quad County South game Friday night.
Canon-McMillan (1-1, 2-3) forced overtime at 31-31 when quarterback Ty Jansma connected with wide receiver Roman Cimarolli on a 37-yard touchdown pass with 27 seconds left in regulation. Cimarolli beat two defenders on the left hash marks and made a juggling catch.
In overtime, Jansma was sacked on third down and Canon-Mac had to settle for a 34-yard field goal by Rhys Maetz and a 34-31 lead.
On Hempfield’s first play of OT, Lippman scrambled to the one-yard line and then went off left tackle on the next play for the game-winner.
Andrew Brentz scored three touchdowns, and Lippman threw for three scores to lead Hempfield.
Brentz turned a swing pass from Lippman into a 26-yard touchdown with 7:47 remaining to break a 24-24 tie. Brentz opened the scoring with a 41-yard TD catch on a swing pass and he had a six-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter.
Canon-McMillan (1-1, 2-3) trailed 13-10 at halftime and Cimarolli returned the second-half kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown that gave C-M a 17-13 lead.
Cimarolli caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Jansma that tied the score at 24-24 with 11:32 remaining, but Brentz scored his third TD on the ensuing drive.
Jansma completed eight of 16 paqsses for 174 yards. Cimarolli hauled in four catches for 112 yards.
Bryce Collins had 130 rushing yards for Canon-Mac in the first half and scored on a five-yard run in the second quarter. Collins finished with 168 yards on 25 carries. Maentz booted a 30-yard field goal with 47 seconds left in the first half.
Hempfield is 1-1 in conference and 2-3 overall.
