O-R Athlete of the Week: Gina Tedrow, Waynesburg

Name: Gina Tedrow
Grade: Junior
School: Waynesburg
Sport: Softball
Tedrow’s week: Waynesburg had four games last week and Tedrow pitched a gem in every single one of them. She pitched 24 innings, allowed only eight hits, two runs, had 55 strikeouts and only 10 walks to lead the Raiders to a win in all four games.
The week started with a 3-1 win over Bentworth where she had 19 strikeouts and allowed only four hits. The next day she had an 11-strikeout one hitter in an 11-1 five-inning victory over Washington and doubled twice, driving in four runs.
Then Tedrow blanked California in back-to-back days. She pitched a five-inning no-hitter with 14 strikeouts in an 11-0 win Thursday, and had a complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts Friday in an 8-0 win.
In the no-hitter, only one ball was put in play, a popout to third base.
Of the four, Tedrow said her first game against Bentworth was her best in what was a special week.
“It started pouring in the middle of that game against Bentworth and I was able to pitch through it,” Tedrow said. “It made it very tough to control pitches. Usually the games where it rains are the ones that I have the most amount of walks, but I ended up getting 19 strikeouts.”
On the rise: Tedrow said her best pitch is her riseball. In fact, she throws two different types of rise balls. One is a more traditional riseball that breaks up out of the zone and the other one starts low and has late movement in the zone.
“I throw my riseball a lot. Most of the time when the count is 0-2 that’s what the batter is getting,” Tedrow said. “I’ve put a lot of work into that pitch, because it moves so well. One of the reasons why it works so well is I can throw it two different ways. I can start it low and break into the strike zone and a normal riseball that breaks out. It’s actually two different pitches on my calling card. A low rise and a regular rise.”
Building momentum: Tedrow started as a freshman at second base with a veteran group of seniors before moving to pitcher last year. Now she’s part of a team that’s growing together fast and gaining confidence in the process. The Raiders have qualified for the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs.
“We hadn’t played many of these teams before in our section and we’re a really young team,” Tedrow said. “When we beat Frazier, we were like head-in-the-clouds excited. We heard they beat Brownsville and we knew they were a tough team. We were a little nervous going into that game against Frazier and then we ended up winning.”
Dog lover: Tedrow’s family has a pair of Cane Corso dogs, Zeus and Zuri. Cane Corso is a large breed of dog. They can grow to 28 inches tall and weigh over 100 pounds. Tedrow enjoys spending time with them when she gets a break from her busy softball schedule.
“We had a Weimaraner when I was really little, and he passed away when I was in elementary school. My dad saw a picture of Zeus online and that he was for sale, and in the face he reminded us of our old dog,” Tedrow said. “We decided to get him and there was another one there too. We didn’t intend on getting two, but we ended up leaving with two of them.”
