Name: Teagen Crouse

Grade: Junior

Sport: Football

School: Waynesburg

Crouse’s week: Crouse wasted little time making an impact in his first game as Waynesburg’s full-time starting quarterback. He rushed for three touchdowns and threw two more, all in the first half, and the Raiders rolled to a 50-6 victory over West Greene Friday night.

Crouse finished with 236 passing yards and 71 rushing yards for a memorable first night under center.

Outside of a couple spots starts as a freshman and sophomore, this was Crouse’s first experience as a varsity quarterback, but he looked like a seasoned veteran.

“There’s always some nerves going into a game, but I felt prepared, so it wasn’t too bad,” Crouse said.

Running wild: Crouse’s first three scores were on the ground. He scored on runs of 13 and 28 yards in the first quarter and had a nine-yard touchdown run in the second.

Some of his success came on designed runs and others he used his athleticism to make a play.

“We have a pretty good, balanced offense,” Crouse said. “Two of the three (touchdowns) were on designed runs. I try to be a pass-first guy, but when they drop deep into coverage, it’s easy to take off and get some yards.”

Accurate arm: Crouse completed eight of the nine passes he attempted, none bigger than a 91-yard bomb to Jack Ricciuti for a touchdown just before halftime, which made the score 35-0. He also connected with Ross Tennant on a three-yard touchdown pass.

The big play to Ricciuti came when Waynesburg was backed up inside its own 10 in the final minute of the half.

“We had two timeouts, and we thought we could go down and get one more (touchdown),” Crouse said. “I trust Jack outside. That’s my guy. I saw he had one-on-one coverage and I knew we had a chance to make a big play and get some points on the board. He was to the boundary and the rest of our receivers were off to the right. The safety stayed in the middle of the field and Jack took the top off on a go route.”

Getting back on track: The other sport Crouse participates in at Waynesburg is track and field, but last year he didn’t get out of the starting blocks. An injury in the preseason sidelined him for the season, so he’s already looking forward to the spring and getting a chance to show what he can do.

Crouse typically participates in 100 and 200 meters as well as the 400 relay and sometimes will do jumping events in the field.

“A lot of the guys on our (football) team run track,” Crouse said. “We have a great track program with Coach (Rick) Layton. He keeps us in shape and we get good speed work in. I’m excited for this year.”

Avid outdoorsman: Most of the hobbies outside of sports for Crouse revolve around the outdoors. He enjoys hunting and likes to go bass fishing at his friend’s pond. He’s already had some success in his young hunting career.

“I got an eight-point (buck) when I was in eighth grade,” Crouse said. “It was a pretty wide rack, so it was a nice buck.

“A couple of years ago my pap taught me how to fly fish, but I’m not good at it. We just usually bass fish around here.”
