O-R Athlete of the Week: Colton Temple, Fort Cherry
Name: Colton Temple
School: Fort Cherry
Grade: Sophomore
Sport: Baseball
Temple’s week: Sometimes it can take hitters a little bit to adjust to live pitching once the season begins, but that certainly wasn’t the case for Temple.
He went to the plate 10 times last week and did not record an out, going 7-for-7 with two hit by pitches and one walk. Two of Temple’s seven hits were homers and he drove in seven runs.
Temple said his offseason preparation helped him get off to a hot start.
“I hit a lot in the winter off a (pitching) machine, so I think that helped me a lot,” Temple said. “Before my at-bats I’m making sure I’m not talking to anyone and am just focused on the pitcher and looking for tendencies that he has.”
Temple hit a home run in each game he played in last week. Both down the right-field line at Fort Cherry’s baseball field.
“The second one I hit, I knew was gone, for sure,” Temple said. “It was a rocket. The first one I didn’t think was high enough to get over, but it got over.”
Temple knows he isn’t going to carry a perfect batting average all season, but he’s hopeful his approach will continue to produce results.
“I just want to keep the consistency going,” Temple said. “I know I’m not going to bat 1.000. I’m going to get out, but if I’m consistent through the season, that’ll be good.”
Temple is a first baseman for Fort Cherry and he also pitches. His pitch mix includes a fastball, curveball and splitter.
He’s a catcher on his travel ball team, the Northeast Padres. They travel to different showcases in various states in the south during the summer.
“It’s really fun to meet new people and play in different states,” Temple said. “You also see better competition, so I have a really good time with that.
“I enjoy catching, because you’re behind the dish and you can see the whole field. I feel like, as a catcher, you have to be a leader of your team.”
Two-sport standout: Temple has started since he was a freshman on the baseball team and football team. He’s an H-back on the football team and has helped the Rangers win back-to-back WPIAL Class A titles. It’s been a fun ride for Temple playing both sports.
“From a very young age our sports teams have been very good in our age group,” Temple said. “We knew when we were young, we’d have very good teams when we got to high school. Once we got to our freshman season, everything just hit us. We were winning and really haven’t lost much, so it’s been fun.”
Avid outdoorsman: When Temple isn’t on a football field or a baseball diamond, he’s likely in a tree stand. Temple enjoys deer hunting. He’s been rifle hunting since he could get his licence and recently started bow hunting.
“I’ve got a buck every year since I started hunting when I was eight or nine years old,” Temple said. “I got a 9-point (buck) last year and this year I got an 8-point (buck).”
