O-R Athlete of the Week: Caleb Patton, Washington
Name: Caleb Patton
Grade: Junior
School: Washington
Sport: Baseball
Patton’s week: In one game, Patton put up as many triples as some players do in an entire career. He went 4-for-4 with four triples, scored four runs and had 3 RBI in a 15-14 win over Winchester Thurston, making for a memorable season finale.
“I was counting them as I was going and all of my buddies on the team were saying how crazy it was that I had three triples,” Patton said. “Then I ended up getting another one.”
Patton accomplished the feat against several different Winchester Thurston pitchers. It didn’t seem to matter who was out there on the mound, because Patton was locked in at the plate.
“The first one was over the right fielder’s head and it hit off the fence,” Patton said. “The second one was a line drive down the right-field line. The third one was even closer to going over the right-field fence and the last one was in the right-center gap. I was just seeing the ball really well at the plate. I saw a couple fastballs early and then I was seeing a lot of curveballs, so I just stayed back and waited on my pitch. That was one of the best games I’ve ever had.”
Big brother: This season was the first time he got to share the varsity diamond with his younger brother Noah. The two have played together growing up, but it was extra special to play on the high school team at the same time.
“Back in Pony and Bronco, he’d move up a year, so we could play on the same team and ever since then I couldn’t wait to play with him on the high school team,” Patton said. “When I pitched this year, he was the catcher and I just really loved that.”
Three-sport star: Patton is busy year-round playing sports. He’s a wide receiver and safety on the Prexies football team and a wrestler in the winter. He qualified for states at 145 pounds in wrestling. If he had to pick one, however, he enjoys playing baseball the most.
“Wrestling is probably my best sport, but baseball is fun to play for me,” Patton said. “It’s just so fun to play with everyone on the team. I really like it.”
Avid outdoorsman: When Patton isn’t playing a sport in high school, he likes to fish and hunt in his spare time. His family goes to the Anawanna Club in Amity to fish in the spring and summer.
In the fall and winter, deer hunting becomes the focus. He’s a rifle hunter and has got an 8-point deer in the past.
“We have a property out in Confluence and we always go and work on it to get the deer population up, so we can go hunt it,” Patton said. “I like being out there in the peace and quiet and the anticipation of seeing a deer that leads up to the shot. All my family is out there hunting as well, so it’s a good time. Even after you’re done for the day, going to camp and talking with everyone is fun.”
