High school basketball: Highlanders remain unbeaten, get road win
Taylor Schumacher scored a game-high 18 points and McGuffey continued its undefeated start to the season with a 58-28 thumping of host Uniontown in a non-section contest Thursday night.
McGuffey (3-0) was in control throughout, holding leads of 19-4, 30-14 and 44-24 at the quarter stops.
Lexi Ewig gave the Highlanders a second player in double figures as she tossed in 13 points.
Geelece Ingram paced Uniontown (1-3) with 11 points.
Trinity 46, Bishop Canevin 17
Trinity got back on the winning track with a 46-17 thumping of host Bishop Canevin.
The Hillers (2-1) held Canevin (1-2) to five points in the first half.
Sutton Williamson led a balanced Trinity attack with 10 points. Macie Justice tossed in nine, Sam Horne scored eight and Ruby Morgan had seven.
Belle Vernon 56, California 43
Kenzi Seliga had 18 points and four steals, powering Belle Vernon to a 56-43 win over visiting California.
Caroline Lee scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Leopards (2-1).
California’s Rakiyah Porter shared game scoring honors with Seliga by tossing in 18. Hayley Gibson added 10 for the Trojans (1-1), who played the second game in as many nights.
Chartiers-Houston 44, Burgettstown 35
Ali Wingard scored 17 points and Chartiers-Houston rode a big third quarter to a 44-35 victory over Burgettstown in a non-section game on the Bucs’ home court.
Chartiers-Houston (2-2) led 21-20 at halftime but pulled away by outscoring the Blue Devils 18-9 in the pivotal third quarter. Wingard scored six points in the quarter, as did teammate Mia Mitrik.
Paige Klodowski led Burgettstown with 11 points. Kaitlyn Nease and Savanna Rush each contributed 10.
Carlynton 44, Avella 37
Lucy Vetter led three Carlynton players in double figures with 18 points and the Cougars slipped past host Avella 44-37 in non-section play.
Jocelyn Griffin added 14 points and Carly Hughes contributed 12 for the Cougars (3-1). Carlynton had only three players score.
Haleigh Rush led Avella (0-3) in scoring with 16 points. Ava Frank tossed in 12.
The game was close throughout as Carlynton led 25-18 at halftime and 34-27 after three quarters. The teams played to a 19-19 standoff in the second half.
California 57, West Greene 35
California pulled away with 18 points in the second quarter and went on to a 67-35 win over West Greene in non-section action Wednesday night..
California led 17-13 after the first quarter and 35-18 at halftime.
Rakiyah Porter led the way for California with 18 points. Hayley Gibson finished with 14 points.
Brooke Miller scored 10 points for West Greene.
Boys results
Hampton 72, Peters Township 68
Peters Kramer poured in a game-high 29 points and Hampton held on to beat visiting Peters Township 72-68 in a non-section contest.
Hampton (3-0) trailed 18-16 after one quarter but held PT (2-2) to only five points in the second quarter to take a 26-23 lead. The Talbots led 50-45 after three quarters.
Four players did the bulk of the scoring for Hampton. Alex Nyilax had 14 points, Liam Mignogna scored 13 and Robert Koll had 12.
Jack Dunabr led four PT players in double figures with 17 points. Sean Thelk made five three-pointers for 15 points, Cam Mills followed with 14 and Dylan Donovan had 12.
Frazier 36, West Greene 30
Bryce Leachman scored 14 points and Frazier rallied in the fourth quarter to beat host West Greene, 36-30.
The game was tied 18-18 at halftime and West Greene (1-1) moved out to a two-point lead after three quarters. The Commodores won the game by outscoring the Pioneers 12-4 in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Lane Allison led West Greene in scoring with 12 points.
