High school basketball: Trinity’s balance knocks out KO

Trinity used balanced scoring and two good quarters to overcome a 36-point performance by Keystone Oaks’ Erond Jakupi to beat the Golden Eagles 72-58 in a non-section boys basketball game Tuesday night at Hiller Hall.

Jacob Dunkle led four players in double figures for Trinity (2-2) with 21 points. Dante DeRubbo was close behind with 19 points, Jonah Williamson contributed 12 and Tyler Johnson tossed in 10.

Dunkle and DeRubbo played big roles in Trinity grabbing control of the game over the middle two quarters. After trailing 11-10 at the end of the first quarter, Trinity outscored KO (0-4) 26-13 in the second quarter and 21-16 in the third for a commanding 57-40 advantage. DeRubbo scored 12 of his points in the second quarter and Dunkle had 11 in the period.

Burgettstown 64, Carlynton 61

Zack Schrockman scored a game-high 23 points, James Leuice added 21 and undefeated Burgettstown held off Carlynton 64-61 in a foul-filled game on the Cougars’ home court.

Burgettstown (4-0) led 25-14 after one quarter and 32-31 at halftime. The Blue Devils pushed the gap to 54-42 with a big third quarter but were outscored 19-10 over the final eight minutes.

Gerry Cox scored 10 points for Burgettstown.

Jaydin McKnight and Ryan Lewis each scored 22 points for Carlynton (1-3).

Belle Vernon 79, Bishop Canevin 57

Tommy Davis had a career-high 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead Belle Vernon to a 79-57 victory over Bishop Canevin in a non-section game.

Belle Vernon (2-1) didn’t pull away until the fourth quarter. The Leopards led 34-31 at halftime and 55-51 after three quarters. Belle Vernon won with a 24-6 scoring edge in the pivotal final period.

Trevor Kovatch and Zion Moore each finished with 16 points for the Leopards. Alonzo Wade collected nine rebounds.

Bishop Canevin (1-3) was led in scoring by Drew Allen Jr.’s 19 points. Michael Vaughn and Jason Cross each had 11.

Avella 58, Freedom 44

Westley Burchianti had a double-double and Avella rolled to a 58-44 victory over winless Freedom.

Burchianti flipped in a game-high 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Eagles improved their record to 4-2. Freedom fell to 0-7.

Avella trailed 25-23 at halftime but Burchianti sparked a second-half charge and the Eagles held the Bulldogs to only 19 after intermission.

Logan Bickerstaff had 11 points and Cody Patterson 10 for Freedom.

Monessen 68, Carmichaels 37

Monessen outscored Carmichaels by 25 points in the second and third quarter to cruise to a 68-37 victory on Tuesday in non-section play at Monessen High School.

The Greyhounds (2-1) were led in scoring by Tim Kershaw, who put in a game-high 17 points. Teammates Lorenzo Gardner and Dennis Hawkins added 12 points apiece.

The Mikes’ Ayden Adamson scored 14 points, as Carmichaels fell to 2-3.

Monessen is at Aquinas Academy today in non-section play at 7:30 p.m.

Jefferson-Morgan 65, Beth-Center 52

The Rockets had five players in double figures and took control in the second half to defeat the Bulldogs, 65-52, on Tuesday in non-section action at Beth-Center High School.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Jase Bedillion and Collin Bisceglia share high-scoring honors with 14 points apiece. The Rockets’ Houston Guesman added 13, and Dayten Marion (12) and Max Ivanusic (11) contributed for the visiting team.

Beth-Center’s Jason Zellie put in a team-high 12 points. Johan Sussan added 11 and Brody Tharp and Ryan Minerd dropped 10 points apiece.

The Bulldogs (1-4) had a 12-8 lead after the first quarter, and took a 25-22 advantage into the halftime break. Jefferson-Morgan (5-1) had a 21-13 advantage in the third quarter and outscored Beth-Center, 20-14, in the fourth period.

In other games

Washington remained winless after a 74-60 setback at South Allegheny in non-section play. Mapletown lost at Frazier 66-28. No game details were reported by press time.

Girls results

Frazier 51, Jefferson-Morgan 43

Allie Yauch poured in a game-high 24, sparking Frazier to a 51-43 win at Jefferson-Morgan in non-section action.

The Commodores (3-3) led 20-12 after one quarter and moved out to a 30-17 halftime lead. J-M (1-3) held a 25-21 scoring edge in the second half.

Kayla Larkin led the Rockets with 20 points. Ava Wood followed in the scoring column with 12.

Waynesburg 49, Beth-Center 17

Kaley Rohanna scored a game-high 16 points as Waynesburg remained perfect on the season with a 49-17 non-section victory over visiting Beth-Center.

Waynesburg (5-0) led 8-3 after the first quarter and shut B-C out in the second period in taking an 18-3 halftime lead and pulled away from there.

Josie Horne had 10 points for Waynesburg.

Emma Shashura and Lauren Brown each scored seven points for Beth-Center (2-3).

West Allegheny 58, Fort Cherry 33

Emma Rumperto scored 19 points, Alaira Holte had 17 and West Allegheny defeated visiting Fort Cherry 58-33 in a non-section game Monday.

West Allegheny (2-3) scored 20 first-quarter points and led 35-15 at halftime.

Alaira Holte also hit double figures for the Indians with 10 points.

Ava Menzies and Raney Staub each tallied 10 points for Fort Cherry, which lost for the first time in four games.

In other games

Ringgold was a 42-33 winner over Carlynton in a non-section action.
