High school basketball: Waynesburg girls remain undefeated
The undefeated Waynesburg girls basketball team started quickly and then cruised to a 57-14 non-section victory over neighboring West Greene on the Pioneers’ home court Thursday night.
Waynesburg (6-0) raced to a 22-9 lead after one quarter and moved out to a 33-12 advantage at halftime.
Kaley Rohanna led four players in double figures for Waynesburg with 18 points. Avery Davis followed with 12 points, Peyton Cowell had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Josie Horne had 10 points.
West Greene’s record slipped to 1-5.
Trinity 59, Laurel 46
Trinity put three players in double figures, led by Ruby Morgan’s 20 points, and the Hillers defeated winless Pine-Richland 59-46 in a non-section game at Hiller Hall.
Trinity (3-1) led 29-24 at halftime and pulled away in the second half. The Hillers led 47-37 after three quarters.
Agatha Niccolai and Macie Justice followed Morgan in the scoring column with 10 points each.
Madison Zevasky had a game-high 21 points for Pine-Richland (0-5).
Chartiers-Houston 45, California 36
Amelia Brose and Ava Capozzoli combined for 27 points and a strong first half sparked Chartiers-Houston to a 45-36 win at California in the Class 2A Section 4 opener.
Chartiers-Houston (1-0, 3-2) forged a 25-12 halftime advantage that kept California (0-1, 1-4) playing catchup the rest of the way.
Brose led the Bucs’ attack with 14 points and Capozzoli had 13.
California’s Rakiyah Porter scored a game-high 25 points.
Washington 63, Bentworth 45
Kaprice Johnson scored 24 points, Olivia Woods had 23 and Washington picked up its first victory, defeating host Bentworth 63-45 in the Class 2A Section 4 opener.
After leading 11-7 after one quarter, Wash High (1-0, 1-3) began pulling away in the second period, opening a 31-15 halftime lead that grew to 50-29 after three quarters.
Amber Sallee had 16 points and nine rebounds for Bentworth (0-1, 1-5).
Beth-Center 57, Frazier 27
Emma Shashura fired in 21 points and Beth-Center won its Class 2A Section 4 opener over visiting Frazier, 57-27.
The Bulldogs (1-0, 3-3) scored 19 points in each of the first three quarters, leading 38-16 at halftime and 57-23 after three quarters.
Lauren Brown scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds for B-C and Kylie Mcdaniel had 13 rebounds to go with six points.
Allie Yauch led Frazier (0-1, 3-4) with 14 points.
Burgettstown 45, Laurel 19
Burgettstown shut down a young and rebuilding Laurel team, 45-19, in a non-section game on the Blue Devils’ home court.
Burgettstown (4-2) led 10-4 after one quarter before outscoring Laurel (2-4) 15-0 in the second quarter for a commanding 25-4 halftime advantage.
Kaitlyn Nease had a double-double and led the Blue Devils’ attack with 17 points.
Brownsville 52, Jefferson-Morgan 20
Ava Clark and Skyler Gates combined for 33 points, powering visiting Brownsville to a 52-20 win over Jefferson-Morgan in non-section action.
Clark led the Falcons (6-1) with 17 points and Gates tossed in 16.
Jefferson-Morgan’s record fell to 1-4.
West Mifflin 42, Belle Vernon 41
Belle Vernon charged back in the fourth quarter to force overtime but West Mifflin pulled out a 42-41 victory over the Leopards.
Belle Vernon (0-1, 3-2) trailed 33-23 after three quarters but a big fourth quarter by the Leps sent the game to OT tied at 38-38.
Saylor Lee had a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds for Belle Vernon, and Nina Francia tallied 10 points.
Kendall Lee led West Mifflin (1-0, 3-3) with 15 points.

West Greene 67, Waynesburg 53
West Greene’s Lane Allison has the ability to produce big offensive games and he had one Thursday night, scoring 27 points to spark the Pioneers to a 57-53 win over visiting Waynesburg in a non-section contest.
West Greene (2-2) forged a 17-5 lead after one quarter but Waynesburg (2-4) closed to within 26-23 at halftime. The Pioneers pushed their advantage to nine points entering the final period. Waynesburg got within two points late but that was as close as the Raiders could get.
Patrick Durbin scored 13 points for West Greene.
Alex Vansickle paced Waynesburg with 16, followed by Cole Headlee’s 12 and 11 from Jackson Dean.
Monessen 84, Aquinas Academy 80
Lorenzo Gardner poured in 36 points as the Greyhounds rode a big fourth quarter to an 84-80 victory over Aquinas Academy in a non-section shootout Wednesday.
Timothy Kershaw and Devontae Robinson followed with 19 and 16 points, respectively, for Monessen.
Aquinas Academy jumped out to a 28-16 lead in the first quarter and led 39-32 at halftime and 65-55 after three quarters.
The Greyhounds exploded to a 29-15 advantage in the fourth quarter in rallying for the win.
Sam Duer paced the Crusaders with 27 points and was followed by Jacob Guillen (22) and David Zaharko (11).
