High school basketball: Peters Township ends Penn-Trafford’s streak

Peters Township moved ahead in the second quarter and stayed there to the end to beat Penn-Trafford 72-66 in a non-section boys basketball game played Friday night game at AHN Arena.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak by Penn-Trafford (4-2).

Peters Township (4-2) trailed 19-15 at the end of the first quarter but outscored the Warriors 26-17 in the pivotal second quarter to take a 41-36 lead. Both teams scored 14 points in the third quarter.

Mickey Vaccarello, fresh off the Indians’ successful football season, led Peters Township in scoring with 14 points. Nick McCullough and Jack Dunbar added 13 points each to a balanced attack.

Penn-Trafford’s Tyler Freas tossed in a game-high 24 points and Zack Feldman had 13.

Elizabeth Forward 62, Trinity 58

Isaiah Turner scored 20 points and Elizabeth Forward held off Trinity, 62-58, in a non-section game played at Hiller Hall.

EF (4-1) trailed 28-26 at halftime but moved out to a 46-43 advantage after three quarters.

Trinity (2-3) had a chance to tie in the final minute but was unable to get a shot to fall and EF clinched the win at the free-throw line.

Trinity put three players in double figures led by Dante DeRubbo’s 16 points. Jonah Williamson followed with 14 and Jacob Dunkle had 10.

Canon-McMillan 62, Ringgold 45

Canon-McMillan held Ringgold to 15 points in the first half and went on to a 62-45 win over the Rams in a non-section game.

Canon-McMillan (3-2) led 31-15 at halftime and then added to it in the third quarter, which ended with the Big Macs on top 50-25.

Eamon O’Donaghue tossed in a game-high 20 points for the Big Macs. Roman Koenemund scored 15.

Daryl Toliver led Ringgold (1-4) with 15 points.

Carmichaels 72, Geibel Catholic 42

Carmichaels put four players in double figures and pulled away in the middle quarters to rout visiting Geibel Catholic 72-42 in a non-section game.

The Mikes led 17-12 after one quarter, then outscored the Gators 39-16 over the next two periods.

Dom Colarusso and Robbie Wilson-Jones led a balanced Carmichaels attack, each scoring a game-high 16 points. Aydan Adamson wasn’t far behind in the scoring column, tossing in 15 points and Colin Andrews contributed 14.

Gary Tarbick led Geibel with 14 points.

The win evened Carmichaels’ record at 3-3. Geibel is 0-6.

Avella 73, Mapletown 39

Westley Burchianti scored 29 points and Avella rolled to its third consecutive win, a 73-39 thumping of visiting Mapletown in non-section action.

Avella (4-2) erupted for 54 points in the first half.

Bryce Wright contributed 18 points for the Eagles.

Jeremiah Mick led Mapletown (0-4) with 15 points.

Frazier 64, Bentworth 46

Frazier outscored host bentworth 17-5 in the fourth quarter to cement a 64-46 victory over the Bearcats in the Class 2A Section 4 opener for both teams Friday.

Chris Harper led Bentworth (0-1, 1-4) with 19 points and Ben Hays scored 17.

The Bearcats trailed 36-21 at halftime but cut the Commodores’ lead to 47-41 entering the final quarter.

Dalian McManus led Frazier (1-0, 4-3) with a game-high 21 points.

Frazier 55, Jefferson-Morgan 41

Frazier jumped out to an early lead and stayed in front the rest of the way in defeating visiting Jefferson-Morgan 55-41 for the Commodores’ third win in a row after an 0-3 start.

Dalian McManus led all scorers with 25 points for Frazier. Brock Alekson and Brennen Stewart added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Dayton Marion scored 14 points for J-M (5-2) and Houston Guesman followed with 12.

Girls results

Jefferson-Morgan 49, Carlynton 26

Kayla Larkin and Ava Wood combined for 35 points as Jefferson-Morgan ended a four-game slide by routing host Carlynton 49-26 on the Cougars’ home court.

Larkin scored a game-high 18 points and Wood followed with 17 as Jefferson-Morgan improved its record to 2-4. Ali Ostrich scored 10 points for the Rockets.

Lucy Vetter’s 11 points topped Carlynton (3-3).

J-M outscored Carlynton in each of the first three quarters and led 15-8, 26-14 and 42-18 at the quarter stops.

Elizabeth Forward 56, Ringgold 20

Alyssa Terza scored a game-high 15 points as Elizabeth Forward topped visiting Ringgold 56-20 on Thursday in a Class 4A Section 3 game.

Elizabeth Forward rolled to a 22-4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Mia Sostaric added 13 points for EF (1-0, 4-2).

Kamryn Webb had 10 points for Ringgold (0-1, 1-4).

In other games

Canon-McMillan won its Class 6A Section 2 opener over Mt. Lebanon, 53-42, Friday. The win improves the Big Macs’ record to 4-1 overall. No game details were reported by press time. Monessen was a 61-24 winner at Sto-Rox in a non-section game.
