High school basketball: Bucs battle back, beat Bulldogs

Ava Capozzoli scored a game-high 21 points as Chartiers-Houston rallied for a 46-41 victory over visiting Beth-Center in a Class 2A Section 4 girls basketball game Monday night.

Beth-Center (1-1, 3-4) trailed 18-17 at halftime but moved out to a 34-30 on the strength of a 17-point third quarter.

Chartiers-Houston (2-0, 4-2), which has won three straight, battled back and outscored the Bulldogs 16-7 in the pivotal fourth quarter. Capozzoli, who made four of her five three-point field goals in the third quarter, converted two key free throws in the fourth to move the Bucs into the lead.

Emma Shashura and Violet Trump each scored 10 points for Beth-Center.

Avella 32, Northgate 26

Ava Frank scored 19 points to power Avella to its first win of the season, 32-26, over Northgate in a non-section game played on the Eagles’ home court.

Frank scored six of her points in the first quarter, when Avella (1-5) forged a 10-4 lead. The Eagles stayed in front the rest of the way, leading 15-11 at halftime and 24-16 after three quarters.

Northgate is 2-4.

Charleroi 59, Jefferson-Morgan 30

Riley Jones poured in 23 points and Charleroi rode a big first half to a 59-30 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in a non-section game.

Charleroi bounced back from its first loss of the season to improve its record to 4-1. The Cougars led 37-21 at halftime after scoring 22 points in the second quarter.

Bella Carroto and Ella Sypolt each tossed in 10 points for Charleroi.

Jefferson-Morgan slipped to 2-5.

Belle Vernon 42, Ringgold 35

Belle Vernon outscored Ringgold 11-5 in the pivotal fourth quarter to pull out a 42-35 victory in a Class 4A Section 3 game on the Rams’ home court.

Belle Vernon (1-1, 4-3) led 26-20 at halftime before Ringgold (0-2, 1-5) closed to within 31-30 entering the final period.

Kenzi Seliga led the Leopards’ attack with a game-high 15 points and five assists. Saylor Lee contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

Kamryn Webb had 11 points to lead Ringgold.

South Park 49, Burgettstown 26

After some cold shooting in the first half by both teams, undefeated South Park heated up in the second half and beat host Burgettstown 49-26 in a non-section game.

South Park (4-0) trailed 16-11 at halftime as the Eagles were held to two points in the second quarter. In the third, however, South Park outscored Burgettstown (4-3) by an 18-2 margin to take control of the game.

Ella Clifford scored 14 points and Nika Contakos followed with 13 for the Eagles.

Kaitlyn Nease had a double-double for the Blue Devils with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

California 53, Carmichaels 36

California dominated in the middle quarters and cruised to a 53-36 victory over host Carmichaels in a Class 2A Section 4 game.

California (1-1, 3-4) led 9-6 after one quarter and then outscored Carmichaels (0-1, 1-5) by a 30-17 margin over the next two quarters.

Hayley Gibson led the California attack with a game-high 21 points. Rakiyah Porter hit double figures, tossing in 13.

Megan Voithofer paced Carmichaels with 15 points and Ali Jacobs scored 13.

In other games

In Class 6A Section 2, Peters Township routed Baldwin 65-39 and Chartiers Valley was a 62-22 winner over Canon-McMillan. In Class 2A Section 4, Frazier pulled out a 57-54 win over Bentworth. No game details were reported by press time.

Boys results

Springdale 82, California 45

Springdale broke open a close game in the third quarter and went on to an 82-45 victory over host California in non-section action.

Springdale (5-1) led 41-29 at halftime and then outscored the Trojans 28-5 in the third quarter.

Jackson Pribanic led the Dynamos with 24 points.

Darius Johnson scored eight points to lead California (0-5).

West Greene 78, Hundred (W.Va.) 37

West Greene outscored Hundred (W.Va.) by 27 in the second half en route to a 78-37 victory in non-section play at West Greene.

The Pioneers (3-2) had a 44-30 halftime lead and limited Hundred to seven points in the second half.

West Greene’s Lane Allison was the game’s leading scorer with 30 points. The Pioneers’ Matt Wassil had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Hundred was led in scoring by Colt Sandy, who put in 18. Teammate Trey Huggins added 11.

West Greene is at Propel Braddock Hills (2-3) tonight at 5:30 in the Class A Section 2 opener for both teams.

Chartiers-Houston 80, Beth-Center 64

Avery Molek scored a career-high 30 points in Chartiers-Houston’s 80-64 victory over Beth-Center at Chartiers-Houston in Class 2A Section 4 play.

The Buccaneers (1-1, 5-1) had a 19-13 lead after the first quarter and led 38-34 at halftime. Chartiers-Houston had a 26-22 advantage in the third quarter and outscored the visitors, 16-8, in the fourth.

The Bucs’ Justus Buckingham had 18 and Nate Gregory added.

Justin Zellie led the Bulldogs (0-1, 1-5) in scoring with 16. Teammates Brody Tharp and Santino Revi added 14. Jonah Sussan scored 11 for B-C.
