Schumacher scores 1,000th-career point in McGuffey’s win over Avella
Taylor Schumacher scored a game-high 26 points, including the 1,000th of her career, in McGuffey’s 65-40 victory over Avella on Saturday to win the Avella Tip-off tournament.
The Highlanders used a 24-12 advantage in the second quarter to take control. McGuffey had a 20-12 advantage in the third period and a 10-5 edge in the fourth.
The Highlanders’ Lexi Ewig added 10 points. McGuffey’s Maura Janovich and Mykenna Meighen had eight points apiece.
South Fayette 70, Altoona 38: The Lions had a slow start but came alive in the second quarter to down Altoona on Saturday in the North Allegheny tournament.
South Fayette outscored Altoona, 20-12, in the second period for a 25-18 halftime lead.
The Lions had a 16-10 edge in the third and a 29-10 advantage in the fourth.
South Fayette’s Ryan Oldaker scored a game-high 23 points. Teammate Juliette Leroux had 15 and Lailah Wright added 12.
South Fayette 58, Greensburg Central Catholic 29: Juliette Leroux scored 21 points as the Lions pulled away from the Centurions in non-section play.
Belle Vernon 64, Westinghouse 8: The Leopards rebounded from a 56-14 setback on Saturday to defeat Westinghouse on Sunday.
Belle Vernon had a 26-0 lead after the first quarter and cruised to victory.
The Leopards’ Aubrey Brown and Saylor Lee each scored 12 points. Brown had eight points in Belle Vernon’s loss to Shady Side Academy on Saturday.
West Greene 54, Jefferson-Morgan 18: The Pioneers had three players in double figures to defeat the Rockets.
West Greene’s Kendra Tharp scored a team-high 12 points. Teammates Marissa Tharp and Madelyn Roberts had 11 points apiece.
The Pioneers had a 20-4 lead after the first quarter and a 30-6 halftime advantage. West Greene outscored Jefferson-Morgan, 12-6, in the third and fourth quarters.
Beth-Center 51, Ligonier Valley 19: The Bulldogs outscored the Rams by 11 in the first quarter and never looked back in a non-section victory.
Beth-Center had a 35-10 halftime advantage that it extended to 47-18.
The Bulldogs’ Violet Trump led all scorers with 14 points.
Geibel Catholic 63, Carmichaels 21: The Gators’ Emma Larkin scored a game-high 26 points in a non-section victory over the Mikes.
Geibel Catholic had a 33-4 lead after the first quarter and cruised to victory.
The Gators’ Ava Henderson had 14 points and Mallory Clemmer added 10.
Ali Jacobs led Carmichaels in scoring with 11 points.
Boys basketball
Trinity 50, Canon-McMillan 47: The Hillers rallied to send Saturday’s game into overtime and defeated the Big Macs at Canon-McMillan.
The Big Macs had a 33-30 lead after three quarters before Trinity had an 11-8 edge in the fourth period. The Hillers had a 9-6 advantage in the overtime period.
Canon-McMillan’s Roman Koenemund had a game-high 22 points.
Jacob Dunkle led Trinity in scoring with 20 points. Teammate Jonah Williamson added 12.
Avella 62, Frazier 51: Bryce Wright recorded a double-double and the Eagles downed the Commodores in overtime in non-section play.
Frazier used a 14-5 advantage in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime but Avella outscored the Commodores by 11 in overtime.
Wright had 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Eagles’ Brayden Fuller (12), Eli Maidment (11) and Cameron Ullom (10) were in double figures.
Frazier’s Dalian McManus shared high-scoring honors with 19 points. Teammate Conlan Higbee had 10.
Burgettstown 68, Propel Montour 59: Burgettstown had four players in double figures in defeating Propel Montour on Saturday in non-section boys basketball play at Burgettstown.
Bryce Speer led the Blue Devils (1-0) in scoring with 15 points. Teammates Parker Rommes and Colton County had 11 points apiece, and Blake Neal added 10.
Propel Montour’s John Anderson scored a game-high 29 points, including 21 in the first half. Propel’s TyAire Hawkins put in 11.
Anderson made seven 3-pointers and Speer had three from beyond-the-arc.
Ringgold 68, Brownsville 60: The Rams rallied in the fourth quarter to down the Falcons.
Brownsville’s Jaiden Pradter had a game-high 21 points. Teammates Preston Rosado (16) and Max Oieudonne (15) also were in double figures.
Ringgold had four players in double digits with Szyair Dungee’s 18 points leading the way. The Rams’ Demitri Lowe had 16. Takeo Tolliver put in 12 and Xavion Thomas added 10 for Ringgold.
