High school basketball: Chartiers-Houston knocks off section leader
Avery Molek and Jack Lochran combined for 43 points, powering Chartiers-Houston to an 86-68 upset of visiting Fort Cherry in a Class 2A Section 4 boys basketball game Friday night.
The Bucs (8-3, 15-5) had their best offensive game of the season and put five players into double figures, led by Molek’s 22 points. Lochran scored a career-high 21 points, Nate Gregory had 15, Paul Williamson added 14 and Justus Buckingham tallied 12.
Chartiers-Houston led 38-34 at halftime and 56-48 after three quarters and pulled away down the stretch with a 30-point fourth quarter. Molek had eight of his points in the final period.
It was the first section loss for Fort Cherry (9-1, 14-5). Shane Cornali led the Rangers with 22 points, Derek Errett had 19 and Blake Sweder chipped in with 14.
Canon-McMillan 45, Hempfield 44
Canon-McMillan clinched a playoff berth out of Class 6A Section 2 with a 45-44 home-court win over Hempfield.
Eamon O’Donaghue led the Big Macs in scoring with 15 points.
Burgettstown 59, Bentworth 44
Zack Schrockman tied his career-high with 31 points as Burgettstown defeated visiting Bentworth 59-44 in Class 2A Section 4.
Schrockman scored 13 of his points in the first quarter as playoff-bound Burgettstown (8-2, 15-5) forged a 20-8 lead. Bentworth (2-9, 3-15) closed to within 33-23 at halftime but Burgettstown took control of the game with a 22-11 scoring edge in the third period.
Carson Tkalcevic chipped in with 19 points, including five three-point baskets, for the Blue Devils.
Ben Hays poured in a team-high 25 points for Bentworth.
Washington 72, Waynesburg 28
Ruben Gordon led three Washington players in double figures with 21 points and the Prexies rolled to a 72-28 victory over visiting Waynesburg in Class 3A Section 4.
The win leaves Washington at 9-1 in the section and 13-4 overall.
De’Ondre Daugherty scored 13 points and Zxavian Willis added 11 for the Prexies.
Waynesburg is 2-8 in section and 6-13 overall.
Thomas Jefferson 56, Trinity 41
Trinity threw a scare into Thomas Jefferson for a half but the Class 5A Section 1-leading Jaguars pulled away in the second half for a 56-41 victory at Hiller Hall.
Thomas Jefferson (8-0, 15-3), which clinched at least a share of the section title, led by only 23-22 at halftime before taking control with a 20-11 scoring edge in the pivotal third quarter.
Evan Berger led TJ with a game-high 22 points and Noah Prosser was close behind with 18.
Jacob Dunkle led Trinity (3-5, 8-11) with 20 points. Jonah Williamson chipped in with 10.
California 51, Jefferson-Morgan 47
California outscored visiting Jefferson-Morgan 21-8 in the pivotal fourth quarter and charged from behind to beat the Rockets, 51-47, in Class A Section 2.
California (5-3, 6-13), which also passed Jefferson-Morgan (4-4, 12-8) in the standings, trailed 21-18 at halftime and 39-30 entering the fourth quarter.
Jacob Zioleki and Vinny Manzella led the Trojans’ comeback, tossing in 18 and 17 points, respectively.
John Woodward paced J-M with 12 points and Houston Guesman had 11.
South Fayette 52, Mars 34
Michael Plasko poured in a game-high 24 points and South Fayette held Mars to only 12 second-half points as the Lions rolled to a 52-34 victory in Class 5A Section 4.
South Fayette (5=3, 11-8) led by only two points at halftime but outscored the Planets 16-7 in the third quarter and 12-5 in the fourth.
Gavin Orosz chipped in with 14 points for South Fayette.
Mars is 4-4 in section and 10-10 overall.
Brownsville 51, McGuffey 46
Brownsville kept its slim playoff hopes alive in Class 3A Section 4 with a 51-46 victory over McGuffey.
Kaden Wimmer and Trent Wible each scored 14 points for the Falcons (3-8, 8-13) and Jeremy Praster had 10. Brownsville battled back from an 18-15 halftime defici9t by scoring 36 second-half points.
Grayson Wallace flipped in a game-high 19 points for McGuffey (4-6, 13-8), which currently holds the final playoff spot from the section.
In other games
Frazier pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 42-34 win at Carmichaels in Class 2A Section 4. Geibel Catholic picked up its first victory of the season, winning at Mapletown 62-58 in overtime. No game details were reported by press time.
Girls results
Beth-Center 46, Avella 38
Kyleigh McDaniel scored 13 points and Beth-Center took control of the game in the third quarter and beat host Avella 46-38 in a non-section game.
Beth-Center (10-9), which climbed above the .500 mark, led 23-20 at halftime and outscored Avella 12-6 in third quarter.
Violet Trump had 10 points for the Bulldogs.
Ava Frank and Sydney Strope each tossed in a game-high 16 points for Avella (4-16).
Washington 32, Carmichaels 23
Olivia Woods and Kaprice Johnson each scored nine points as Washington remained in the hunt for the Class 2A Section 4 championship with a 32-23 win at Carmichaels on Thursday.
The Prexies (9-1, 11-8) extended their winning streak to four games. They led 10-2 after one quarter, 16-9 at halftime and 24-12 after three quarters.
Megan Voithofer pumped in a game-high 15 points for Carmichaels (2-8, 3-16).
South Fayette 45, Montour 33
South Fayette bounced back from a close loss to Class 5A Section 4 leader Lincoln Park by defeating visiting Montour 45-33 on Thursday.
Erica Hall led the way for the Lions (5-3, 11-7) with 15 points and Haylie Lamonde contributed 10. South Fayette took control early and led 23-10 at halftime.
Jordyn Wolfe scored a game-high 17 points for Montour (3-5, 8-11).
