High school basketball: Canon-McMillan deals PT girls first loss

Lauren Borella made free throws with 15.9 seconds remaining to give Canon-McMillan’s girls basketball team a one-point lead and the Big Macs went on to a 44-41 victory over previously undefeated Peters Township in a Class 6A Section 2 game on the Big Macs’ home court Friday night.

Canon-McMillan (4-8, 11-10) snapped a six-game losing streak by overcoming an eight-point deficit in the final six minutes. The Big Macs pulled to within 41-40 with 1:07 remaining when Peters Township (11-1, 20-1) attempted to run out the clock. The Big Macs came up with a steal with 37 seconds remaining and called a timeout five seconds later.

Borella was fouled on a drive down the side of the lane and converted both free throws to put the Big Macs up 42-41. PT then called a timeout and was able to get a straight-line drive to the basket but missed the layup. C-M rebounded and Borella, who finished with 15 points, made two more free throws with 3.5 seconds left.

Canon-McMillan led 17-14 at halftime, but PT used a 21-13 scoring edge in the third quarter to move out to a 35-30 lead.

PT’s Natalie Wetzel scored a game-high 19 points and Gemma Walker had 12.

C-M’s Nadia Davis scored 10 points.

Chartiers-Houston 54, Carmichaels 22

Ava Capozzoli poured in a game-high 19 points and Chartiers-Houston wrapped up a share of the Class 2A Section 4 title with a 54-22 victory over host Carmichaels.

The Bucs finish 11-1 in section (16-5 overall) to tie for first place with Washington. The Bucs and Prexies split their two meetings.

Amelia Brose scored 14 points for C-H, which led 19-2 after one quarter and 31-8 at halftime.

Megan Voithofer had eight points for Carmichaels (3-9, 4-17).

South Fayette 55, West Allegheny 32

Julietta Leroux tossed in 18 points, Lainey Yater added 12 and South Fayette was a 55-32 winner over visiting West Allegheny in Class 5A Section 4.

The Lions (6-4, 13-8) led 18-2 after one quarter and 32-8 at halftime.

Boys results

Monessen 90, California 59

Senior guard Lorenzo Gardner scored a school-record 64 points, powering Class A Section 2 champion Monessen to a 90-59 victory over host California.

Gardner scored 30 of his points in the first half, which ended with Monessen (9-1, 17-3) on top 36-33. The Greyhounds pulled away in the second half, when Gardner tallied 34 more points.

Noah Neil’s 16 points topped California. Caden Monticelli had 13 points and Vinny Manzella 12.

Peters Township 76, Bethel Park 66

Jack Dunbar and Nick Miller each scored 21 points to power Peters Township to a 76-66 victory at Bethel Park in Class 5A Section 1.

PT (8-2, 16-5) led 35-34 at halftime and 58-49 after three quarters. Miller helped the Indians stay in front, making six of seven free throws in the fourth quarter.

Nick McCullough had 11 points for PT.

Nick Brown led four Bethel Park in double figures with 19 points.

Trinity 74, Ringgold 43

Trinity prepared for the upcoming WPIAL playoffs with a 74-43 thumping of Ringgold in a Class 5A Section 4 game at Hiller Hall.

Trinity (4-6, 9-12) scored 46 first-half points and held Ringgold to less than seven points in two of the four quarters.

Jacob Dunkle led the Hillers with 22 points, Anthony Giorgi had 15, Jonah Williamson 14 and Dante DeRubbo 10.

Daryl Tolliver’s 16 points led the Rams. Braylen Lomax scored 12.

Chartiers-Houston 58, Carmichaels 34:

Playoff-bound Chartiers-Houston rode Justus Buckingham’s 21 points to a 58-34 win at Carmichaels in Class 2A Section 4.

Avery Molek added 11 points for the Bucs (9-3, 16-6), who have won seven straight section games.

Dom Colarusso had 10 points for the Mikes.

West Greene 47, Mapletown 44

Lane Allison scored a game-high 18 points and Class A Section 2 runner-up West Greene held off host Mapletown, 47-44.

West Greene (8-2, 14-7) led 28-26 at halftime and stretched the gap to 42-36 after three quarters. Mapletown held an 8-5 edge in the final period.

Parker Burns scored 10 points for the Pioneers.

Braden McIntire’s 14 points were tops for Mapletown (1-9, 2-17). A.J. Vanata contributed 10 points.

Jefferson-Morgan 80, Geibel Catholic 41

Houston Guesman led four players in double figures with 16 points and playoff-bound Jefferson-Morgan defeated Geibel Catholic 80-41 in Class A Section 2.

Deyton Marion added 14 points, Jase Bedillion had 12 and Collin Bisceglia scored 10 for the Rockets (5-5, 13-9).

McGuffey 64, Waynesburg 39

Grayson Wallace had a huge game, scoring 26 points and sparking McGuffey to a 64-36 victory over Waynesburg.

The playoff-bound Highlanders (5-7, 14-8) led by only 28-15 at halftime and then pulled away with a 17-6 scoring edge in the third quarter.

Aydan Cunningham scored 16 points for McGuffey. Austin Surber had nine points for Waynesburg.

South Fayette 60, West Allegheny 51

Michael Plasko scored a game-high 24 points, including his 1,000th career point, as South Fayette defeated West Allegheny 60-51 in Class 5A Section 4.

Gino Satira chipped in with 10 points for the Lions (7-3, 13-8), the section’s second-place team.

West Allegheny’s Justin Manns scored 15 points and Josiah Bell tallied 13, including his 1,000th career point.

Union 91, Avella 68

Lucas Stanley scored 35 points, which included nine three-point field goals, and Union won 91-68 over Avella in Class A Section 1.

Grayson Blakely added 20 points for Union (8-2, 12-10) and Braylon Thomas had 12. The Scotties led by only 45-43 at halftime but held Avella (4-6, 9-13) to 25 points in the second half.

Westley Burchianti tossed in a team-high 27 points for the Eagles. Nate Cilla and Bryce Wright each had 18.

Mt. Lebanon 61, Canon-McMillan 43

Class 6A Section 2 champion Mt. Lebanon won at Canon-McMillan, 61-43.

Liam Sheely led three players in double figures for Lebo (9-1, 18-3) with 19 points.
