High school basketball: Winning weekend for Wash High

De’Ondre Daugherty scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half and the Washington boys basketball team held off host Monessen 59-56 in a non-section game Saturday.

Ruben Gordon scored 11 points for the Prexies (14-7), who led 43-33 at halftime.

Monessen (17-4) closed to within 53-48 after three quarters but Washington held on with an 8-6 scoring edge in the final period.

Monessern’s Lorenzo Gardner, one night after scoring a school-record 64 points against California, led the Greyhounds against the Prexies with 24 points. Gardner had 18 of his points in the first half. Rodney Johnson added 19 points.

On Friday, Washington clinched a share of the Class 3A Section 4 title by winning 47-40 at Mount Pleasant.

De’Ondre Daugherty scored 17 points to lead the Prexies. Braiden Wise contributed 13 points for Washington, which held a 28-26 lead after three quarters before outscoring the Vikings 19-14 in the final period.

Dante Giallonardo scored a game-high 20 points for

the third-place Vikings (7-4, 8-11).

Girls results

Washington 38, Monessen 36

Olivia Woods tallied 14 points as Washington edged host Monessen 38-36 in an overtime non-section clash of first-place teams Saturday.

Washington (14-8), the Class 2A Section 4 co-champion,

led 14-6 after the first quarter and 21-14 at halftime. Monessen (16-5), the Class

A Section 2 winner, rode a 17-6 advantage in the third quarter to a 31-27

advantage.

The Prexies came back to tie it at 34-34 in regulation

then outscored the Greyhounds 4-2 in the extra period thanks to baskets by

Woods and Kaprice Johnson.

Sidney Campbell led Monessen with nine points.
