It wasn’t a good time for the Monessen girls basketball team to have its least productive game of the season.

Katerina Tsambis scored a game-high 20 points and fourth-seeded Riverview defeated fifth-seeded Monessen 44-23 Thursday night in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals at Fox Chapel High School.

Riverview (16-6), the Section 3 runner-up, advances to the semifinals next week against top-seeded Union, which defeated West Greene in the quarterfinals.

The 23 points were the fewest scored in a game this season by Monessen (18-6), which will drop into the consolation round and face West Greene for third time this season Saturday.

The game wasn’t much different from a non-section contest Monessen lost at Riverview, 50-25, on Feb. 3.

Riverview led 10-6 after one quarter and moved out to a 25-14 lead at halftime. The Raiders held Monessen to only nine points in the second half.

Lola Abraham scored 12 points for Riverview and Lily Bauer tossed in 11.

Union 59, West Greene 16

Top-seeded Union built a 26-point lead in the first quarter and went on to a 59-16 home-court victory over West Greene in the WPIAL Class A semifinals.

Union improved its record to 16-5. The Scotties have won 12 in a row and have not lost since December.

Union led 29-3 after one quarter and 45-3 at halftime.

West Greene is 10-14 and will play in the consolation round Saturday against Monessen. The Pioneers are trying to secure one of five PIAA tournament berths from the WPIAL.

Kelly Cleaver was the leading scorer for Union with 16 points. Kendra Tharp paced the Pioneers with five points.
