High school basketball: C-H gets defensive, stops Burgettstown
Nate Gregory scored a game-high 22 points and Chartiers-Houston gave its playoff hopes a big boost with a 53-35 victory over Burgettstown in a Class 2A Section 4 boys basketball game played on the Bucs’ home court Monday night.
Chartiers-Houston (4-3, 11-5) outscored Burgettstown (5-2, 12-5) in every quarter. The Bucs led 12-9 after one quarter and 24-19 at halftime. The key to the game was the third quarter when C-H outscored the Blue Devils 16-6 to open up a double-digit lead.
James Leuice led Burgettstown with 18 points. Zack Schrockman finished with 10.
“The key was we really played well defensively,” said Chartiers-Houston coach Rich Tranquill. “Isaac Jenkins did an amazing job defensively against Schrockman.”
The Bucs don’t have much time to enjoy the win because section play resumes tonight and C-H has to play at Beth-Center, which is battling for a postseason berth.
Fort Cherry 85, Beth-Center 41
The Bulldogs kept it close in the first quarter, but the Rangers took control in the second for an 85-41 triumph in Class 2A Section 4 play.
Fort Cherry (6-0, 11-4) was led in scoring by Derek Errett, who had a game-high 28 points. Shane Cornali (14), Blake Sweder (12) and Jack Kitzmiller (11) were also in double digits for the Rangers. Errett had 8 steals, 5 assists and 5 rebounds.
The Bulldogs’ Revi Santino scored 11 points.
West Allegheny 59, Canon-McMillan 58
Canon-McMillan’s second-half rally came up a point short as host West Allegheny held off the Big Macs 59-58 in a non-section contest played in Imperial.
West Allegheny (11-6) led 28-23 at halftime but Canon-McMillan closed to within 43-41 after three quarters. The Big Macs held a 17-16 scoring edge in the fourth quarter.
Justin Manns led three players in double figures for West Allegheny (11-6) with 18 points. Bradon Bell followed with 17 and Brady Miller had 14.
Canon-McMillan (7-9) was led by Roman Koenemund with 11 points. Evan Morris contributed 10.
Monessen 57, Brownsville 53
The Greyhounds rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to defeat the Falcons, 57-53, in non-section play.
Monessen had four players in double figures with Tyvaughn Kershaw’s 14 points leading the way. Devontae Robinson had 13, and Tim Kershaw and Darryl Ray put in 11 points apiece.
Brownsville’s Trenton Wible scored a game-high 16 points. Teammate Rylan Johnson added 13.
The Greyhounds improved to 12-1 overall.
Frazier 63, Bentworth 46
The Commodores jumped out early and cruised to a 63-46 Class 2A Section 4 triumph.
Frazier’s Dailan McManus led the game in scoring with 25 points. The Commodores’ Brock Alexson (13) and Brennan Stewart (12) were also in double figures.
The Bearcats (2-5, 3-11) were led in scoring by Ben Hays, who had 11 points.
Frazier (4-3, 9-7) had a 21-9 lead after the first quarter and a 30-15 halftime advantage. The Commodores outscored Bentworth, 20-14, in the third period, and 17-13 in the fourth.
Jefferson-Morgan 70, Geibel Catholic 50
Dayten Marion scored 19 points and Jefferson-Morgan took advantage of two big quarters — the second and fourth — to beat host Geibel Catholic 70-50 in a Class A Section 2 contest.
J-M (3-2, 10-6) trailed 12-9 at the end of one quarter, then erupted for 25 points in the second quarter for a 34-19 halftime lead. The Rockets tacked on 24 points in the fourth quarter.
John Woodward finished with 15 points for J-M.
Geibel’s Tommy Kolencik scored 24 points. Gary Tarbuck had 12 points and Mike Miller 10 for the Gators (0-5, 0-16).
Girls results
Washington 44, Brentwood 31
Olivia Woods poured in 25 points, sparking Washington to a 44-31 victory over visiting Brentwood in non-section action.
Wash High (8-8) led 11-4 after one quarter then stumbled a bit in the second and took only a 14-11 lead into halftime. The Prexies regrouped and outscored Brentwood (6-10) by a 30-20 margin in the second half.
Kaprice Johnson also finished in double figures for the Prexies as she tallied 10 points.
Paige Boehm had 16 points for Brentwood.
South Fayette 57, Indiana 34
Juliette Leroux led a balanced offensive attack with 14 points and South Fayette rolled to a 57-34 win over visiting Indiana in a non-section game.
The Lions (9-6) were energized by a big first half. South Fayette led 20-10 after one quarter and 34-20 at halftime against an Indiana (11-3) team that is undefeated in Class 5A Section 1 games.
Haylie Lamonde and Eric Hall each scored 12 points for the Lions.
Indiana was led by Cassandra Boyer’s nine points.
Chartiers-Houston 51, Beth-Center 36
The Bucs had a 10-point lead after the first quarter en route to a 51-36 Class 2A Section 4 victory at Beth-Center.
Chartiers-Houstin improved to 8-0 in section play and 12-4 overall.
The Bulldogs fell to 4-4 in the section and 7-9 overall.
The Bucs’ Ava Capozzoli had a game-high 21 points. Amelia Brose added 11 for the visitors.
Beth-Center’s Lauren Brown had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Bentworth 54, Frazier 47
The Bearcats outscored the Commodores by 11 in the second half to earn a 54-47 triumph in Class 2A Section 4 action.
Bentworth (1-7, 4-12) was led in scoring by Aubrie Logan, who had a game-high 22 points. Amber Sallee added 14 and Kayla O’Dell 11 for the Bearcats. O’Dell had 12 rebounds and Logan pulled down 10 for double-doubles. Sallee had eight assists.
The Commodores’ Allie Yauch and Malana Burton scored 17 points apiece. Teammate Chloe Harger added 12.
Charleroi 69, Geibel Catholic 50
Bella Carroto scored 26 points and Charleroi pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat host Geibel Catholic 69-50 in a non-section contest.
Charleroi (7-8) led 28-23 at halftime and 43-37 after three quarters. The Cougars doubled up Geibel 26-13 in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Riley Jones also had a big game for Charleroi, scoring 17 points. Ella Sypolt added 14.
Charleroi overcame a 38-point performance by Geibel’s high-scoring Emma Larkin. Her 38 points included her 1,000th career point. Geibel drops to 11-4 and had its four-game winning streak snapped.
McGuffey 60, Jefferson-Morgan 19
Taylor Schumacher led three McGuffey players in double figures with 19 points, powering McGuffey to a 60-19 victory over visiting Jefferson-Morgan in a non-section game.
The Highlanders (13-3) were never threatened as they forged leads of 24-3 at the end of the first quarter and 40-9 at halftime.
Faith Ealy scored 14 points and Madison Gaso tossed in 13 for McGuffey.
Belle Vernon 50, Ringgold 20
Caroline Lee had 10 points, eight rebounds and five steals, and Belle Vernon used a big first half to defeat visiting Ringgold 50-20 in a Class 3A Section 4.
Belle Vernon (4-4, 8-9) took control from the outset and led 23-5 after one quarter and 40-9 at halftime.
Ringgold (0-8, 3-12) received seven points from Laniya Alford.
California 45, Carmichaels 38
The Trojans trailed by four entering the second quarter, but outscored the Mikes by 11 the rest of the way in a 45-38 Class 2A Section 4 triumph at California.
The Trojans’ Rakiyah Porter scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter. California (5-3, 8-8) had an 18-10 advantage in the final period.
The Trojans’ Hayley Gibson added 13 points.
Megan Voithofer led the Mikes (1-6, 2-13) in scoring with 8 points.
In other games
Fort Cherry was a 49-32 winner at West Greene in a non-section girls game. Chartiers Valley held off a comeback attempt by host Canon-McMillan and edged the Big Macs 41-38 in Class 6A Section 2. No game details were reported by press time.
