Vanata runs for 111 yards in Mapletown triumph

MAPLETOWN – Carson Vanata rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown in Mapletown’s 20-6 victory over Avella in nonconference play Friday night at Mapletown in a season opener.

The teams will meet again Oct. 4 in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.

Vanata opened the scoring 58 seconds into the game on a 47-yard run. Teammate Brock Evans scored on an 18-yard run for a 12-0 advantage at 11:50 of the second quarter. Evans gained 75 yards on 14 carries.

Nate Rankin got the Eagles on the scoreboard after a 17-yard touchdown with 1:59 left in the third quarter.

Colton McKnight put the game away for the Maples when he pulled in a 12-yard reception from Spencer Yeager at 9:32 of the fourth quarter. McKnight added the two-point conversion.
