Jefferson-Morgan too much for Avella
AVELLA — Jefferson-Morgan can now start to think about next week’s regular-season finale for the Class A Tri-County South Conference championship at California.
The Rockets downed Avella, 54-20, on Friday night at Avella and improved to 6-0 in conference play and 9-0 overall. The Eagles fell to (2-4) in conference play and (3-6) overall.
California defeated Beth-Center, 56-14, to move to 6-0 in the Tri-County South and 7-2 overall.
Jefferson-Morgan needed just 70 seconds to score on its opening drive, as John Woodward crossed the goal line on a 26-yard run and a 6-0 lead.
Ryan Baker pulled in a 29-yard touchdown reception from Houston Guesman for a 12-0 advantage with 4:37 remaining in the first period before the Eagles got on the scoreboard when Broden Hamm scored on a 16-yard run and Bryce Wright kicked the extra point to cut the deficit to 12-7. Hamm ran for a two-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Rockets responded to Avella’s touchdown with a five-yard touchdown run by Woodward, and Guesman completed the two-point conversion attempt to Jase Bedillion for a 20-7 lead.
Johnny Gilbert’s 19-yard run at 9:16 of the second quarter extended Jefferson-Morgan’s advantage to 26-7. Bedillion caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Guesman and Ethan Crowe ran in the two-point conversion for a 34-7 lead with 3:53 left in the second period.
Bryce Wright’s 11-yard touchdown reception from Chas Wright got the Eagles within 20 at 34-14 with 22 seconds remaining before halftime.
