Waynesburg overcomes bad start, beats California

COAL CENTER – California returned the opening kickoff for a score but Waynesburg responded with four unanswered touchdowns before holding off a late Trojans’ rally for a 28-18 win in nonconference play Friday night.

Alan Dennis took the opening kickoff 79 yards for a 6-0 lead with 11:45 left in the first quarter.

The Raiders (2-1) responded with Jake Stephenson throwing a four-yard touchdown pass to Jack Ricciuti and Dalton Taylor made the first of four extra points for a 7-6 advantage with 7:40 left in the period.

Stephenson scored on runs of 4, 21 and 3 yards to increase Waynesburg’s lead to 28-6 with 7:27 remaining in the fourth.

Malachi Peak (nine yards) and Lee Qualk (78 yards) cut the Trojans’ deficit to 10 late in the fourth quarter.
