Blue Devils earn team title in home tournament

Burgettstown defended its home mat in winning the Burgettstown Invitational team title on Saturday at Burgettstown High School.

The Blue Devils’ Gaven Suica earned an individual championship at 139 pounds to help his

team to 209.5 points. Bentworth, who crowned three champions in Chris Vargo

(127), Owen Ivcic (145) and Vitali Daniels (189), was second with 184 team points and Meadville (182) came in third.

Chartiers-Houston’s Jorden Williams won an individual championship at 114.

Suica earned a 3-1 decision in sudden victory to defeat Elizabeth Forward’s Lucas Boyer for the championship.

Vargo dominated his bracket with three falls and one technical fall over the two-day tournament. The Bearcat senior pinned Central Valley’s Don Lindsey in 39 seconds for the championship.

Ivcic recorded three pins and a technical fall on his way to the finals, where he earned a 10-4 decision over Ellwood City’s Gabe Lilly.

Daniels had three pins, including one in the finals, and a technical fall on his way to individual goal.

Williams scored four takedowns on his way to a 9-4 decision over Grove City’s Tanner Hamilton in the finals.

Burgettstown’s Darius Simmons (107) and Joey Baronick (285) lost in the finals, as Simmons suffered a 13-1 major-decision setback to Mount Lebanon’s Jonathan Emma and Baronick lost to Central Valley’s Brenan Morgan, 3-2.

The Blue Devils’ Parker Sentipal was third at 133. Teammates Daniel Smith (121), Dylan Slovick (127) and Rudy Brown (152) finished fourth. Eric Kovach was sixth at 160.

Bentworth’s Drake McClure dropped a 14-2 major decision in the finals at 121. The Bearcats’ Alex Rusilko (285) was fourth and Brayden Taggart (172) placed fifth.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Chase Frameli lost in the finals at 160 by sudden victory. The senior won his 100th-career match in the event with a 7-0 decision in the quarterfinals.

The Rockets’ Brock Bayles (189) was fifth, and Levi Heath (215) and Mason Sisler (285) placed sixth.

Washington’s Caleb Patton lost in the blood round at 139 to finish one victory short of placing.
