Pony World Series field is filled
The final two spots for the Pony League World Series, which starts Friday, have been filled.
Bronx, N.Y., is the East Zone champion. Hagerstown, Md., edged the Bronx 8-6 to force a one-game contest for the zone championship and a trip to Washington. Bronx won that game, 6-5.
Bronx will play its first game at the world series Saturday (2:30 p.m.) against Gijon, Spain. The winner of that game will play Washington County Sunday at noon.
In the West Zone, Long Beach, Calif., survived a pair of elimination games to win the championship. Long Beach defeated Sierra Madre, Calif., 12-2, in the final.
Long Beach scored 38 runs in its five games in the zone tournament. The West Zone champions will play Friday (7:30 p.m.) against Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The world series begins Friday (4:30 p.m.) when Host Area champion Mon Valley plays South Zone winner Palmview, Texas.
