Mon Valley advances to Pony League World Series
Zach Plymire drove in the winning run in the top of the sixth inning to rally the Mon Valley Pony All-Stars to a 4-3 victory Sunday over Youngstown (OH) at Mt. Lebanon in the Host Area Tournament.
The team advances to next month’s Pony League World Series at Washington’s Lew Hays Pony Field.
Mon Valley scored twice in the sixth inning. Youngstown had to defeat Mon Valley twice to become the Host Area team in the Pony World Series.
Jack Crovak was the winning pitcher, working three innings of relief with three strikeouts, two walks and he yielded one hit. He relieved starting pitcher Cam Matusik, who pitched four innings, allowing two hits and three earned runs. He struck out four and walked six. Victor Rodriguez took the loss for Youngstown. He worked 3-1/3 innings, allowing one hit and no earned runs. He walked five. Mon Valley (8) and Youngstown (12) combined for 20 walks.
Mon Valley will play in the opening game of the Pony World Series at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 9 against Planview (TX), the South Zone champion.
