Playing arena football was not exactly in the plans for two local products.

Both Joel Zellum, a former Waynesburg University standout, and Isiah Robinson, a Washington High School graduate and West Liberty University product, are excited to play in Saturday’s America Arena League2 Championship Bowl 2 as members of the Wheeling Miners.

The Miners will host the Peach State Cats at 7 p.m. Saturday at WesBanco Arena.

Wheeling is 9-0.

“I was looking to play outdoor football,” Robinson said. “It’s been a blessing either way to be here and playing for this team.

“There’s been a lot of enjoyment and I am happy to have the chemistry with the guys here. We instantly clicked and it’s become a brotherhood.”

Zellum is a unique and upbeat personality. A lineman by trade, he’s played a multitude of positions before settling in as a fullback for the Miners.

“I played offensive line before I was moved to running back and I’ve played defensive line, too. Normally, if you can play multiple positions, it improves your chances to play,” Zellum said.

“I just want to compete and help the team as much as possible. The Miners

are a good fit and it’s too good to be true. It’s ideal for me.”

Robinson, who plays wide receiver and defensive back, is excited to win a title.

“I haven’t played in a championship game since little league,” Robinson said. “It’s an amazing feeling. I’m glad my family and friends can watch me play. The main thing is to get the win in the championship and get a ring.”

Former Clairton High School standouts Lamont Wade and Noah Hamlin also play for the Miners.

Last month, the Miners announced they will join the National Arena League in 2025. The National Arena League currently has six teams located in three time zones.

Zellum said before that, some business on field needs handled.

“Whether people on the outside know, this is a high level of football,” he said. “It’s a championship game and some of us waited a long time to play in games of this magnitude. The folks will find out how intense it is and how high the stakes are. We all care a lot.”

Robinson and Zellum earned honorable mention status in the league’s postseason awards. Both men said they will continue to seek opportunities in other professional leagues after the season.
