The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Thursday that Bryan Rust will miss the start of the regular season with a lower-body injury.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were unable to escape having any injuries before the puck drops on a new season.

The team announced Thursday that forward Bryan Rust will miss two weeks because of a lower-body injury. Depth defenseman Jack St. Ivany will be out for a minimum of six weeks because of a lower-body injury.

Both will be unavailable for the Penguins’ season opener against the New York Rangers, 8 p.m. Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.

Rust, 33, was slated to start the season on the top line with Sidney Crosby and Rickard Rakell prior to his injury.

He appeared in only one preseason game, last Saturday against Columbus.

Rust has 203 goals and 234 assists for 437 points in 638 games with the Penguins, who he has played his entire NHL career with.

Injuries have been part of Rust’s story. He missed nine games with a leg injury in 2018, suffered a hand injury in 2019 that cost him 11 games, and missed 20 games because of injury/illness in 2021-22.

He also missed 20 games with an upper-body injury in 2023 and missed 11 games last season with a lower-body injury.

St. Ivany, 26, was injured during Thursday night’s preseason game against Buffalo, which the Penguins won, 5-3.

He was vying for a spot on the roster after spending parts of the last two seasons bouncing between Pittsburgh and in the AHL with Wilkes-Barre. He’s appeared in 33 games with the Penguins and has recorded two assists.
