Penguins acquire big forward from Red Wings
The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired forward Elmer Soderblom from the Detroit Red Wings on Friday in exchange for a 2026 third-round draft pick that was originally held by San Jose.
Soderblom is signed through the 2026-27 season, and his contract carries an average annual value of $1.125 million.
The 6-8, 252-pound forward has played in 39 games this season. He has two goals, one assist and three points. The 24-year-old has played parts of each of the last three seasons in the NHL, all with Detroit, where he’s accumulated 22 points with 11 goals in 86 career regular-season games.
Soderblom has skated in 119 career AHL games with the Grand Rapids Griffins, notching 23 goals. He’s also appeared in 10 Calder Cup Playoff games.
A native of Sweden, Soderblom played parts of three seasons in his homeland’s top professional league. He also represented Sweden at the 2021 World Junior Championships.
Soderblom was drafted by Detroit in the sixth round of the 2019 draft.
The Penguins, who lost 5-1 to Buffalo on Thursday, continue their playoff push with two home games this weekend. They host the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday (5:30 p.m.) and the Boston Bruins on Sunday (4:30 p.m.).
