ATLANTA — Jesse Chavez, the often-traded reliever who pitched for nine teams in 18 seasons, announced his retirement Thursday.

“As of now, I don’t think we’re going to keep going,” the 41-year-old Chavez said on the “Foul Territory” podcast. “Time to turn the page and focus on the next chapter of life.”

Chavez appeared in four games this season for the Braves, the team the right-hander helped win the 2021 World Series. Atlanta designated him for assignment last week.

From the Los Angeles area, he was 51-66 with a 4.27 ERA, nine saves and 1,044 strikeouts in 1,142 innings in 657 games.

Chavez made his major league debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2008 after being acquired from the Texas Rangers for Kip Wells.

He spent two seasons with the Pirates before going on a journeyman career that included stops with Kansas City, Toronto, Oakland, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels, Texas and the Chicago Cubs.

He had six different stints with the Braves, four with the Rangers, three with the Angels and two with the Blue Jays.

Pirates honor Parker with jersey patch

The Pittsburgh Pirates will honor the late Dave Parker with a patch on their jerseys for the remainder of the season.

The patch, a silhouette of Parker with his nickname Cobra across it, was unveiled Thursday.

Parker, who died June 28, will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend.

The Pirates signed four more of their draft picks RHP Dylan Mathiesen, 3B Brent Iredale, 1B Jared Jones, and C Easton Carmichael Thursday.
