7-run inning sparks Wild Things
CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Wild Things scored seven runs in the top of the third inning and defeated Windy City 9-5 Saturday night at Ozinga Field.
The win, combined with Gateway’s 15-3 loss to Evansville, increased Washington’s lead in the Frontier League West Division to seven games with 19 remaining in the regular season.
The seven-run inning was the second this week for the Wild Things and matched the most scored in a frame this season.
Tyreque Reed led off the third with a single, went to second on a wild pitch by Michael Barker (3-6) and scored on a double by Wagner Lagrange, tying the score at 2-2. Brandon McIlwain doubled home Lagrange and Andrew Czech, giving the Wild Things a 4-2 lead. A double by Jalen Miller scored two more runs, and Tommy Caufield singled home Miller and Lagrange singled home Caufield, making it 8-2.
Kobe Foster (8-1) pitched six innings for the win. He allowed four hits and three runs. The lefty struck out seven and walked one.
Nick McDonald and Ryan Munoz followed Foster on the mound.
Reed had an RBI double in the fifth.
Windy City’s Brennen Dorighi hit a solo home run.
Miller, Washington’s second baseman, and manager Tom Vaeth were ejected in the bottom of the third inning after Foster was called for a balk.
The Wild Things improved their record in road games to 28-9.
Prior to the game, Washington placed shortstop Carson Clowers and pitcher Aaron Forrest on the 60-day injured list and signed infielder Carlos Santiago, who had been released earlier this month by the Miami Marlins farm system.
