Washer homers twice in Wild Things win
CRESTWOOD, Ill. – Jake Washer has played in only two games since being acquired by the Wild Things at the transaction deadline Aug. 12.
Washer, however, made a big impact – actually, two of them – Thursday night in Washington’s 3-1 victory over the Windy City ThunderBolts.
It was the final road game for the Wild Things, who finsh the regular season with an amazing 36-11 record away from home.
Washer hit a solo home run in the third inning and a tiebreaking two-run homer down the left-field line in the seventh. Washer, who is a catcher but was in the lineup as the designated hitter, finished the night 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Washer’s second home run came one out after Jalen Miller led off the seventh with a single.
Zach Kirby (10-4) pitched six innings for the win. He allowed one run on five hits and one walk. Kirby struck out six. Gyeongju Kim pitched the ninth inning for his 27th save.
Four Washington pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.
The Wild Things conclude the regular season with a three-game series at home against Schaumburg beginning Friday night. The Boomers hold a half-game lead over Lake Erie for the final wild-card spot in the West Division.
