Wild Things edge Florence to sweep series
FLORENCE, Ky. — Washington pulled out a 13-12 victory on Sunday against Florence to sweep the three-game series.
The Wild Things head into the All-Star break with the best record in the Frontier League at 38-18. Washington leads Lake Erie (37-20) by 1 ½ games in the West Division. Quebec tops the East Division at 37-20.
The Wild Things had a 13-6 lead after scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning, but the Y’alls (23-33) scored six runs in the bottom of the frame to make things interesting.
Gyeongju Kim gave up a three-run homer to TJ Reeves in the eighth and Florence had runners on first and second in the ninth, Washington’s closer recorded a strikeout for his 15th save this season.
The Wild Things continued their strong offensive output in the series and scored in the fifth on Tommy Caufield’s RBI single to score Caleb McNeely.
Washington scored three runs apiece in the second, third and fourth innings for a 7-4 lead as the Y’alls added two runs apiece in the second and third frames.
Carson Clowers had an RBI double and McNeely hit a two-run blast in the second. McNeely has 14 homers and 57 RBI this season.
Robert Chayka had an RBI double and Clowers hit a two-run shot.
Caufield, who had three hits in the game, singled in the sixth, and scored on Brandon McIlwain’s base hit after advancing to third on Jalen Miller’s double.
Ricardo Sanchez and McIlwain each had an RBI in the eighth. McIlwain had three RBI and Sanchez added two.
The Wild Things have five All-Stars in McNeely, Kim, Christian James, Kobe Foster and Zach Kirby, but Kim (visa limitations) and Kirby (nagging injury) will not make the trip to Quebec City.
Washington returns to action Friday in Evansville at Bosse Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
