McNeely, Things have grand time in victory

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Caleb McNeely hit a grand slam and tied a Wild Things record with six RBI, and Zach Kirby took a shutout into the eighth inning as Washington routed the Schaumburg Boomers 14-2 Sunday afternoon at Wintrust Field.
The Wild Things, who are in first place in the Frontier League’s West Division, won two of the three games in the series. Washington improved its record to 16-4 in road games.
McNeely, a former standout at West Virginia University, hit a grand slam in the Wild Things’ five-run seventh inning that gave them a 14-0 lead. McNeely had a run-scoring single in the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the fourth. It is the 11th time in franchise history that a player has driven in 11 runs in a single game. McNeely leads the Frontier League with 44 RBI.
Kirby (4-3) scattered seven hits and allowed two runs (one earned) over 7 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two.
Alex Ovailles, who homered in Washington’s loss Saturday night, went 3-for-5, Evan Berkey scored three times, Andrew Czech doubled and Ricardo Sanchez drove in a pair of runs.
The Wild Things will resume their nine-game road trip Tuesday in Sauget, Ill., against the Gateway Grizzlies.
