Wild Things sign son of former major leaguer

The Wild Things’ pitching staff will definitely have a different look in 2025.
Washington has 13 pitchers on its current roster, only two of whom played for the Wild Things last year.
The latest addition to the staff is the son of a former major league pitcher.
Washington announced Monday the signing of righthander Ivan Oviedo, who spent the past four years in the Texas Rangers’ farm system.
Oviedo is the son of former major league pitcher Juan Oviedo, who spent eight years in the big leagues.
Ivan Oviedo (6-2, 195) is a native of the Dominican Republic and was an international free-agent signing by the Rangers in 2021.
After a year in the Dominican Summer League, Oviedo played three seasons pitching in rookie and Class A leagues. He did make one start last summer for Round Rock, the Rangers’ Class AAA affiliate. Oviedo pitched five innings for the Express, giving up two runs (one earned). He split the rest of last year between the Rangers’ two Class A affiliates, posting a 2-0 record with one save in 15 relief appearances.
Oviedo had a 9-9 record, three saves and 3.45 ERA in his career with the Rangers. He struck out 223 batters over 190.1 innings.
He was released by the Rangers late in spring training last month.
Oviedo’s father pitched in the major leagues under two names: Juan Ovideo and Leo Nunez. He pitched for the Kansas City Royals, Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays from 2005-14, appearing in 349 major league games.
