Wild Things sign former Georgia Tech outfielder
Players released from minor league camps at the end of spring training are always coveted by independent baseball teams. They bring professional experience and have a head start on the season after playing every day in Florida or Arizona.
The Wild Things announced Tuesday that they have signed one of those recently released position players, speedy outfielder Jake DeLeo, a former sixth-round draft pick of the Miami Marlins out of Georgia Tech.
DeLeo (6-0, 194), spent two years in the Marlins’ farm system before being released last month at the end of spring training.
A right-handed hitter, DeLeo played 99 games for a pair of Class A affiliates last summer and produced 22 extra-base hits with 16 stolen bases. After being drafted by Miami in 2023, DeLeo appeared in 41 games for Class A Jupiter and had 12 extra-base hits and was 14-for-14 in stolen base attempts.
A native of Connecticut, Deleo played three years at Georgia Tech and batted .366 with 23 doubles and 14 home runs in his final season.
DeLeo has a tie to the Wild Things. He was a teammate of Washington third baseman Tommy Caufield when both played for Chatham in the Cape Cod League in 2022.
