Wild Things complete sweep of Lake Erie to pull even in division
AVON, Ohio – The race for the Frontier League’s Central Division is officially on.
Behind a complete game performance by veteran lefty ace Kobe Foster, the Washington Wild Things won 11-1 Sunday to complete a weekend sweep of Lake Erie.
Washington (41-31) and Lake Erie (40-30) are tied for first place in the division standings.
Foster (4-1) yielded five hits, one run, struck out five and did not walk a batter. He retired the first nine batters he faced.
He was locked in a pitchers duel with Lake Erie’s Ethan Smith until the Wild Things’ offense broke through in the sixth.
Washington got two runners on in the sixth and Ben Watson tried to sacrifice them to third. Smith fielded the bunt and tried to get an out at third, but his throw sailed high and up the line, allowing Three Hillier to score.
Wagner Lagrange followed with an RBI single and Watson later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Liquori to make it 3-0.
Smith (5-5) did not record an out in the frame and took the loss going 5-plus innings with three unearned runs on four hits with three walks and strikeouts each.
Washington broke the game open with a six-run eighth inning on a bases-loaded walk, an error by Lake Erie and a pair of two-run singles by Kyle Edwards and Hillier.
In the ninth, Tommy Caufield added an RBI double and Tyreque Reed plated a run with a single.
Washington returns home for the opener of a three-game set with Windy City, 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
