Wild Things shut out Gateway
Kobe Foster and Hector Garcia combined on a four-hit shutout, Jeff Liquori homered and the Wild Things blanked the Gateway Grizzlies 4-0 Saturday night before 2,528 at EQT Park.
Washington was unable to gain ground in the Central Division standings as Lake Erie overcame a four-run deficit and beat Florence, 7-6. The first-place Crushers lead Washington by two games with 19 remaining in the Frontier League’s regular season. The Wild Things lead Mississippi by 5½ games for the conference’s final wild-card playoff spot.
Foster (5-1) tossed seven innings, allowing only four hits and two walks. He struck out five. He left with a 2-0 lead.
Washington scored its first run when Liquori led off the fifth inning with his ninth run of the season, coming off Gateway starter Zac Treece (4-3). The Wild Things made it 2-0 in the sixth when Ethan Wilder doubled to drive in Cole Fowler.
The Wild Things scored two insurance runs in the eighth when Wilder and Liquori hit consecutive RBI singles.
