Alex Carrillo, a hard-throwing relief pitcher who played last summer with the Wild Things, was promoted Tuesday to the major leagues by the New York Mets.

Carrillo began this year at Class AA Binghamton and was moved up to Class AAA Syracuse, where he made four scoreless outings, striking out 10 and not walking a batter over 5⅔ innings. At Binghamton, Carillo struck out 30 in 19⅓ innings.

Carrillo played only the 2024 season with Washington and was used as the team’s eighth-inning setup reliever. He pitched in 35 games and had a 3-1 record, one save and a 3.31 ERA. With Washington, Carrillo struck out 49 batters in 35⅓ innings.

“When I got the call from Alex and heard the excitement in his voice… that’s what makes all of the long hours and time spent on the bus that we all go through worth it,” Wild Things manager Tom Vaeth said in a release. “And the fact that with all the craziness that was going on in his life and family and friends that he had to call, he took the time to call me and let me know this great news, it truly made me feel very humbled and honored. The Wild Things organization cannot express enough how proud we are of Alex and how fortunate we feel to play just a small part in helping him achieve his lifelong goal of reaching the big leagues.”

Carrillo becomes the ninth former Wild Things player to advance to the major leagues. All nine are pitchers. Carrillo gives Washington three former players currently in the majors, joining Pittsburgh’s Isaac Mattson and San Francisco’s Spencer Bivens.
