Young returns to Wild Things as pitching coach

The Wild Things, who are currently in first place in the Frontier League’s Central Division, have a new pitching coach and it’s a familiar name to those who followed the team in recent seasons.
The team announced Monday that Lukas Young, a former closer who played three seasons in Washington, has been hired.
Young replaces Hector Nelo, who was hired for this year but was not with the team for more than a week. No reason was given for Nelo’s dismissal.
The 28-year-old Young, a Mobile, Ala., native, was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 2017 and spent three seasons in the farm system before suffering an injury that required surgery. After being released, Young signed with the Wild Things in 2022. In his first two years in Washington, Young had 34 saves and a 9-4 record.
He was injured during a spring training game last year and made only two regular-season appearances before being shut down for the season.
Young will be leading the pitching staff tonight when Washington begins a three-game series at EQT Park against the Schaumburg Boomers.
The Wild Things’ pitching has been erratic this season, like many of the Frontier League teams. Washington is seventh in the 18-team league with a 4.56 ERA.
