Wild Things thump Schaumburg in rubber match

Behind strong eight innings by starting pitcher Jordan DiValerio and a grand slam by Sammy Infante, the Washington Wild Things pounded Schaumburg, 12-1, in the rubber match of their series Thursday night at EQT Park.

DiValerio allowed only five hits, had nine strikeouts and did not walk a batter to improve his record to 4-1.

The Wild Things (16-12) took two-of-three in the series from Schaumburg (20-10) in a battle of two division leaders.

Infante put the game away with his grand slam during an eight-run eighth inning. He also had an RBI single in the seventh.

Tyreque Reed had a two run single, Jeff Liquori hit an RBI single and Kadon Morton had a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

All eight runs were charged to Boomers reliever Nick Paciorek. Seven were earned.

Tommy Caufield and Reed hit a solo home run each.

Reed belted his home run in the third to make it 2-0. Caufield had an opposite field homer in the fifth.

Caufield hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the first and scored on an RBI single by Andrew Czech, giving the Wild Things an early 1-0 lead.

Schaumburg got its lone run in the fourth.

Christian Fedko doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on an Anthony Calarco single and scored when Banks Tolley grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.

Derek Salata (2-3) took the loss, allowing three runs over six innings with four strikeouts and two walks.

Jake McCaskey pitched a scoreless ninth to finish off the win.

The Wild Things host Joliet Friday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
