Joliet slams Wild Things
Sometimes a weather-shortened game is welcomed, and that was probably the case for the Washington Wild Things Friday night.
A four-run first inning was just an appetizer for what Joliet had in store.
The Slammers scored in each of the first five innings and cruised to a 12-2 victory in a game that was called due to weather after the top of the seventh inning at EQT Park.
The Slammers (16-14) took advantage of some wildness from Washington starting pitcher Marlon Perez in the first.
Perez walked the first two hitters he faced and then gave up a two-run double to Blake Berry. Brailyn Marine followed with an RBI double and Brandon Heidall plated a run with a double.
Ian Battipaglia scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 5-0 in the second.
Joliet added another run in the third when Dan Wuestenfeld doubled home Chris Davis.
Dylan Goldstein blasted a three-run home run in the fourth and made it 9-0.
Perez (2-3) pitched four innings and allowed 9 earned runs on 11 hits with four walks and one strikeout.
Jackson Hicks relieved Perez in the fifth, but things didn’t get any better for Washington (16-13).
Berry hit a two-run homer and Antonio Valdez had an RBI single.
The Wild Things got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Ethan Wilder scored on a groundout by Cael Chatham.
Tyreque Reed scored on a passed ball in the sixth before the game went into a delay.
CJ Blowers (1-2) pitched six innings and had five strikeouts to earn the win.
Prior to the game Washington activated outfielder Robert Chayka from the 7-day injured list. To make room on the active roster, outfielder Jake DeLeo was released.
