Wild Things walk-off Joliet twice in one day
One walk-off win in a day is always fun, but how about two?
That’s what the Washington Wild Things accomplished Sunday.
First, Kadon Morton’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Wild Things an 8-7 victory in game one of a doubleheader with Joliet Sunday at EQT Park.
Then, Andrew Czech belted a walk-off grand slam to end game two with a 6-4 victory.
Washington (19-13) took three of four games from the Slammers (16-17) this weekend.
Czech’s grand slam came off Joliet reliever Greyson Linderman and capped off a day of baseball that lasted over eight hours.
The first game started just after 1 p.m, was delayed twice due to weather, and finished just before 7 p.m. when Ethan Wilder scored on the Morton walk-off single. Wilder singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sammy Infante.
Washington led 4-1 in game one after four innings thanks to a three-run homer by Czech in the first and a Morton single in the fourth, but Joliet plated six in the top of the fifth.
Ian Battipaglia and Blake Berry drew consecutive bases loaded walks and Braylin Marine was hit by a pitch, which brought in another run.
Dylan Goldstein had a two-run single and Jamey Smart hit an RBI single, which made it 7-4 Slammers.
Infante singled in Wagner Lagrange in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to two.
The Wild Things tied the game in the sixth. Tommy Caufield legged out an RBI infield single and Jeff Liquori scored on a wild pitch.
Washington used six pitchers in seven innings. Hector Garcia (2-1) got the win by pitching a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts. It was his second win in relief in as many days.
Ty Rybarczyk (1-1) took the loss.
In game two, the Slammers scored a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 4-2 lead. Liam McArthur scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. McArthur homered in the top of the first.
Cael Chatham led off the Washington seventh with a walk. Morton singled and Reed walked to set the table for Czech.
Andrew Herbert (2-0) got the final two outs in the seventh and was the winning pitcher. He relieved Zach Kirby, who allowed four runs over 6 1/3rd innings.
Washington travels to Evansville to begin a series Tuesday.
